Fan problem diagnosed

Everyone

I had a thread a few days ago stating my fan switch was bad, so I thought---------- ends up, the fan is bad, works intermittently. I let it idle in the garage, until the temp warning light came on, and the fan had not started yet. Then with a test light, I pierced the insulation of the blue wire at the fan. This is the wire that gets the 12 volts when the fan switch is activated. Had voltage, but no fan rotating. Has any one had any trouble with the fan on there Nomad, or any Vulcan for that matter?

Its an 07, and still on warrantee, so it will be going back to the shop.

BTW, just got back from a week long trip (1875 miles)from North Dakota, through Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and even made it to Savanna Ill. to a biker bar called Poopys-Free camping Check it out at poopys.com. Pretty cool place.

Well; if it has warranty, Id let the dealer look after it for you. Youve already diagnosed the problem for them. They should thank you for that at least.

I installed a fan override switch on mine..... I turn it on when I'm stopped in traffic and whenever I feel like giving her a little cool down.

Ok, Nico... tell me how and show me how you did that... when you get some time... I think that would be a good idea.... (BD says if you can do, then anyone can so I'd like to give it a try).

Scion0, You can do that by adding a simple by-pass. Running the wires would be the hard part.

It would go like this:
Determine which side of the switch is (+) with the key on, and add a wire to that, run the wire to the manual switch, and from the other side of the manual switch back to the other side of the sensor. Then you can run it manually, or the bike will still run it when it wants.

lol I'll go look at it in the morning and see what I did... I think i just connected the 2 wires at the fan switch to see if the fan would come on... it did, so I ran those 2 wires up to a mount on the handlebars with a switch that lights up when it's on so I don't forget and leave it on. Works great.

yes, what Nico did will work as a test.. Pull the plug a stuff a paper clip into the wires.. The fan should come On and stay on, so long as the key is on..

A total man operated switch isn't going to work out well in traffic if you forget.. I can see manual only if you live rural and have no traffic, but in traffic if you forget and don't see the red light, you can blow a hose easy, and that won't make yer day.

I can see having a working set up also be manual, so you could cool the engine after parking. something like cars that do that.

The key does not have to be on for the fan to operate, at least it's that way on my 07.

Come to think of it yer right... The fan will run on after the engine is shut down. My fan comes on very seldom.. NH is just a bit too cool for the engine to get hot enough, unless you get into traffic, and I just don't.

My fan did come on which is rare after a 40 mile ride in 100+ heat. Pull her in the garage and the fan came on. Not sure if it is working or not now.

When I ride home from work in stop & go traffic, then park in the garage, it is quite common for the fan to come on as I stop the bike.
