Fuse size for Stebel air horn

I installed a fuse block for multiple circuits under the left side cover and only had 15 amp fuses so that is what I put in place for my Stebel air horn and audio system. Felt that 15 was too big and wanted to go smaller (did not feel like mashing the button on the horn and measuring the current draw) so I bought some 10 amp fuses and installed them. On my ride home last weekend from Ohio as I was passing through Iowa I came to a construction zone. Right lane was flagged to be closed ahead. I was in the left lane and a semi was in the right lane. I eased ahead of him to give him room to drop in behind me. The jerk behind me and several lengths behind the semi mashed the gas and sped up to cut off the semi. ::) We were running out of room so I just eased off the throttle and dropped back behind the truck so that he could come left into my lane. He did with no problem but then the turd behind me decided to pass us and we were almost to the pinch point where the right lane was closed. Yep, he mashed the throttle again and got part way round the truck before he figured out that he was not going to make it. :(" title="" border="0"/> He let off the throttle and as soon as the end of the truck was by him he cut in between me and the truck. :(" title="" border="0"/> I was not following too close so there was room but it pissed me off so I hit the horn button. That made him jump in a most satisfying manner. I decided that I liked that so much that I went to hit it again and was greeted with silence. Stopped at the next rest area and sure enough the 10 amp fuse was blown so I installed a 15 and it seems to be holding. (yes, I have hit the horn a couple of times since.) Kind of a long story to establish a fuse size but hey, it's all about the journey right?

I have a 20amp fuse on mine, if memory serves me correct the horn pulls 16 - 18 Amps @ 12VDC

You really need to have the horn on a 20 amp circuit. Don't run the horn directly through the original horn button switch. You will eventually ruin the switch and possibly the wiring. The horn switch is perfectly adequate to operate a relay which in turn should operate the horn. You really want to have 12 guage wire feeding the Stebel and a 20 amp fuse protecting the circuit. Check out this thread for detailed instructions, a great schematic from cactusjack and some pics:

P.S. The Stebel will make them jump alright! I'm even considering getting another one to mount on the other side. Figure if one is good, two is better!

I will change the fuse out to a 20 amp. No worry on the horn button, I have an auxilliary relay in the circuit.

Idaho, I know I've blown a 10amp fuse with the Stebel , but I've had a 15amp in mine for some time and it hasn't blown yet. I seem to remember they are rated at 12amps.

Yup, you're right. I checked and I have a 20a fuse in my Stebel circuit. Sorry, I was thinking of my driving light fuse. <hangs head in shame>

20 amp fuse and make sure you have a relay in line. Then you can wire it to the original horn button on the handlebars. I'm gonna add another one too. Make those soccer moms poop

if you get the wiring kit that comes extra with the stebel(got mine free that day) you will have NO problems.
