D*mn plastic bag - Exhaust Cleaning
So get this story..
Riding down a 4 lane today at about 70mph and see a plastic bag blowing around ahead and think...eh, need to try to avoid but there is traffic all around so I can't do anything too drastic. Bag keeps blowing like crazy and I just barely miss it............I think. I get to my destination and my wife and I go walking around...when we get back to the bike she says....there's a plastic bag under the bike. Well, it blew perfectly into my left pipe (V&H baggers) where the pipe meets the muffler and melted ALLLLLLLLLLLL down the whole pipe from about half way under the bike where it crosses to the left side, to about 6 inches on the muffler. Out to the garage with my EasyOff Oven Cleaner!!!!! :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

Damn Todd, what luck. I get mad when I get gas blowed back on the pipes and it crystalizes hard on the pipes. takes alot of chrome polish and rubbing but comes off. Hope you get that crap off w/o too much trouble.

I hope that easy off doesn't screw up your chrome! What a freekin' fluke! Sort of like Nico reappearing....!!!

OK...an hour and a half of cleaning got it off.....Sprayed it on before I posted this thread.
Easy Off is a trick a friend of mine that's been riding 30+ years gave me.......works on boot melt marks really well (you know when you slide your brake foot in to close and accidentally hit the pipe on the right side with the sole of your boot)......and now I've found....plastic bags. Hope you dont have to use it for bags but if you get a boot melt mark......start the bike and heat up the pipes a little......COVER EVERYTHING ELSE UP AROUND THE PIPE AREA, ESPECIALLY PAINTED SURFACES........spray or wipe (I wipe to avoid any chance of overspray) on the area and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes. Boot marks will wipe right off after that....rinse everything down really good....get out your cleaner/polish and wipe everything down and you are ready to go. Plastic melted required a lot more elbow grease and I had to hit it with a plastic scrub pad lightly to avoid any scratching. Took 3 applications. I have used this on 3 different sets of pipes and never had a problem with the chrome...I am sure it would play havoc on paint if you got it on there though and didnt get it off FAST.

I guess your lucky you got it off. I met a guy at a car show that had a nice looking fat boy with V&H pipes. The one blemish on the bike was a smudge on the pipes from what he said was a plastic grocery bag that blew onto them and melted. He said he has tried every type of cleaner and can not get the mark off.

I had the same thing happen to me, except I didn't realize it for a while. Used a lot of easy-off and still had to scrape some off. It's under the saddlebag so it's not too bad, but I'm thinking I may have to re-chrome the pipes one day.

Had a strap come loose on baggage had on back seat once (not on the nomad). The strap was laying against one pipe and melting. Cooked in real good. Used the easy off - came off after 2-3 applications - then buffed pipe with Never Dull. Good as new.

Good information here! I had a bungee cord get away from me and got drapped across the black part of the pipe coming out of the goat's belly where the chrome meets black. I'll work on it now with this info as well as my boot marks on the pipes near the brake pedal.

Yeah. It's not horrible, but I know it's there.

Thought about you & your plastic shopping bag riding on Ortega Highway Sunday....saw at least 2 dozen of the things trapped in bushes...what an eyesore...not to mention the pain in the butt they can be!!!
