Oil change schedule?

How many miles do you ride on an oil change, and what brand of oil are you using?

The owners manual shows change oil every year or at the first 600 miles then 7500, 15,000, 24,000, 30,000. If I understand correctly that breaks down to 600 miles on the first change, 6900 on the second change, 8100 on the third change, 9000 on the 4th change and then dropping back to 6000 on the 5th change.
If this is correct I have been changing oil way to often costing me big bucks.

Lots of us change it earlier. I was going to change mine before the Mesquite trip but noticed that I only had 3K on the Mobil 1 so screw it. It's staying in until I get back. 7500 would be the outer limit for me and my comfort zone. No harm in changing it early.

Oil change schedule?

I'm glad you mentioned this. I bought the 3-year maintenance plan with my Nomad. Covers scheduled maintenance for 3 yrs/36k miles. I was under the impression that oil changes were every 3000 miles. So I had the 600 mile break-in service, then took it back in around 4000 miles, then 7500, now I'm around 11,000 and was going to get it serviced this week when my tires are replaced. I know the next major service is 15k, should I just wait until then?

Oil change schedule?

I use a good brand name dino oil, (Rotella T works well) and change it and the filter every 3000 miles. It may be a little more than neccessary, but it shifts smooth and keeps the engine clean. At $18.00 per oil change its cheap insurance.

My thinking exactly. I run Mobile 1 and change oil and filter every 3000 miles, about once a month during the summer. We are making the ride out to Oregon and back this July, 5000 to 6000 miles depending on our finial route. I am concerned about putting that many miles on an oil change. But I really don't want to do an oil change on the trip.

I know people who run mobil 1 and only change the filter every 12K and add a quart. They have done this for 100K without a problem. It's all about your comfort zone.

shut up todd!! :-)

I drive for a major trucking company, & they NEVER change the oil in the tractors. Oil maintenance consists of changing the filters & adding fresh oil as needed. Many of our older (2003 model year) units are well over 1,000,000 miles........-Rich

Oil change schedule?

One thing to think about, your oil may not be all that dirty after over 3 K miles but.... the viscosity goes down fast. That is not a good thing ! I use Mobil 1 motorcycle oil 20/50, from auto zone at $8.95 per Qt, and change it every 3 K miles. Oil is the single most important thing for a long living engine. Best to not skimp or be cheap. Plus, if you learn how to change it yourself it will save you a lot of money... And that is a good thing !
