disposing of antifreeze

Can used antifreeze be poured down a drain or does it need to be taken somewhere? I won't pour it out on the lawn as it'll kill animals. I know my used oil will go to the local auto parts store but I've never heard of them taking used antifreeze.

All that says is that the state of Indiana wants me to recycle my antifreeze. It doesn't say where or if I need to. For all I know, it might help the waste water treatment plant recondition the water.

Actually it is harmful to the waste water treatment plant since it would kill the bugs that eat your waste....which in turn helps in treating the water!!

Ask your auto parts store or local garage what to do. Up here they accept both oil and antifreeze. Don't pour it down the drain, water treatment plants are not designed to treat chemicals.

Sure didn't know that! I'll call Autozone when I get home and see if they charge to dispose of it. As soon as I get a machine shop to cut down the sending unit bypass thing I can change the antifreeze. I have an '07 and I'll bet its never been changed.

Last time I had the antifreeze changed on my truck, the shop just washed it down the drain.

If they catch them it is a very heavy fine!! Like I said this can realy mess up the treatment plants operation if a lot of this comes to the plant. When it happens they go out to find the source!!

I drain it into a pan and my dog drinks it. We get a new dog every year or so, since they seem to die unexpectedly.

Dogs don't last like they used to.

I would NEVER drain it into my yard for dogs/cats to drink! I just called the local machine shop and plan to take my water sending unit bypass thingy to them this week ($40 just to cut it down to 1") so I'll probably get to change the antifreeze next week.

Seriously we have drop off centres here that we can take hazardous waste to.

Auto zone takes my oil check with them they may take antifreeze too.

If your city or town has a recycling center thay may take it.
