Red header pipes

I just started my 06 after about four weeks of not running. I have Cobra true duels. The only thing I changed from the last time I ran it was added the marble to stop popping. After about four minuets header pipes were red about all the way down ten inches from cylinders. What is it ???

It sounds like the pipes were getting so hot they were glowing red. If that's the case that is not good I would think. It has to get pretty hot for that to happen. I don't know if an extremely lean mixture would cause it to get that hot.

Put it back to the way it was before it turned red. Start the bike back up and see if it still does it.

Were you idling or running up the throttle...it is not a good idea to let these bikes run with an open throttle while sitting still...they will get hot, even stock...when I put my V&H on I made the mistake of letting it sit still with the throttle lock on and throttle open a little (say 1500 - 1800 turns or so) to hear the sound.....noticed the rear pipe shroud starting to discolor a little and shut it down to idle position and it was fine...had to polish the chrome but luckily caught it in time.

No mice. Starts and idles fine FI light not on. I had RPMs up after it warmed up.

Jeepers, when you say that the pipe is turning red do you mean glowing red hot or do you mean that the pipe is discoloring a redish color? Also, how long are you idling the motor?

Probably high rpms, especially if constant, and the notoriously lean nomad is where your excess heat is coming from...I would think it should be fine running down the road benefiting from some air flow.

The red is very normal.

On my 2000 Nomad FI the rear pipe is cherry ride when stopping for fuel on my long runs. I'm running V & H Baggers. It is very noticeable at night. However, just like previously mention by others it will get a lot hotter/redder when not moving due to reduced air flow around the pipe.

My 2000 is not running lean because I've been running it this way for over 100,000 miles with no engine problems. No burned valves and no holes burn through the pistons. The plug are always that light to medium brown color when pulled for inspection.

I can't speak to stock or other pipes since I haven't had them on this bike and I haven't made any long runs at night on my 2008 yet.

Ive never noticed my pipes turning red ,but if I did I would check the sparkplugs to see what they look like. If the weather ever changes here I'll start checking my pipes from now on.

Haven't noticed the red glow - but after stopping to put gas in the damn thing make tinkling and clinking noises like crazy! The cool down sounds are very loud so it must be very hot! It also has V & H pipes c/w Harley mufflers. Note: it did the same thing with the V& H mufflers.

Thats what my bike does also, in conjunction with the singing gascap.
