Question Defeating self cancelling turn signals?

Is there any way to defeat the self cancelling part of the turn signals? Or at least the timer? I think the timer is set at about 8 seconds. I tend to signal before that so they shut off before I've made my turn. The self cancelling feature is a good idea in theory but doesn't work for me. I'm hoping it's just a wire than can be unplugged but I'm guessing it's more involved than that (if it's even possible).

Thanks, all! :)

There is a guy in New Jersey that rides a Voyager XII that created an in-line circuit where you can adjust the timing of the self cancelling turns.

I just hit them a second time if needed.

I hit them again, too, but I don't like having to look down (to see if they've stopped) when I'm in the middle of slowing down, watching for traffic, turning, etc. I tend to slow down early (especially on the side roads) as opposed to waiting until the last minute and slamming on the brakes. (Unlike my last ex wife who went through a set of brakes on her car every 4k miles.) Any contact info for the NJ guy? If I could double the time they're on, I'd probably be happy.

On my original 99 Nomad, the signal unit went bad, and at $92 didn't seem worth it. Simply replaced blinker with an electronic one from the auto store. It worked except for no cancellation.

It's been a number of years, but don't think I had to make any wiring changes at all, just replaced the unit.

I'll have to try that this weekend. I have a brand new electronic flasher unit (that sounds perverted) I was going to use for my 4 ways project. If that works, I'm set. Thanks.

You may be able to remove the spring in the control so it doesn't return to centre. Its something you would have to try and see if it works. If just the flasher replacement works thats the best by far. Try swapping it out with the one from your truck just to see if it works.

I would rather hit the switch a few times than to try and remember to shut the turn signal off. I do have a bike that does not have self cancelling and if you forget to turn them off it can be a very dangerous situation when you are on a main road and a car pulls up from a side street. If they in any way think you are turning they just might pull out.

PM me your contact information and I will forward it to the NJ guy so he can decide if he wants to expand beyond the ones he is making for the XII.

I thought the self cancelling was based on KM(Miles) not time.

They say both come into play but I have parked side the road with my signal light on and it stayed on till I stopped it.

I suppose it could be distance. I thought I read somewhere that it was 8 seconds. That's about right every time I notice it's shut off. Like I said, it's a grand idea. Just doesn't work for me. I'll try a different flasher tomorrow and see what it does. I'm not sure I want to remove the spring. I still want the switch to return to center.

Here is what the owners manual says:
The turn signal switch is automatically canceled after it has been on for 8 seconds, and then the motorcycle has traveled an additional 65m(213ft). However, make a practice of pushing the switch in to stop flashing.

Thanks. I KNEW I read that somewhere. I keep forgetting I have an owners manual. It's still in the pouch in the saddle bag (which has been sitting in my nice warm living room for the past few weeks).

The best solution is to leave it alone and get used to them. I rarely forget to turn them on or off, and after my last bike that didn't have them I really like them.

Chris just has to have something going all the time. He is afraid he will run out of projects to do and then he will get all shaky, his blood pressure will go sky high, he will get weak and pass out.

I hit the signal button for the turn, then as I get closer I hit it again, after the turn I push the button in to cancel the signal.
Chris, I think you are making a mountain out of a molehill my friend.

Could be, TC. Just that I'd rather not have to concentrate on turn signals. Probably the more I ride, the more natural it will be to hit the turn signal button over and over.
