When it rains, it pours

To add to my "summer of misery"...I was going to grab some dinner this evening and was about 2 miles from home in my 2003 Pontiac Grand Am. I went through an intersection and gave it some gas, and it had no power. It started shaking real bad also. I pulled to the side of the road, put it in park, and just idling, it was shaking like a panhead. I made a u-turn to head back home and it was all I could do to cross the road. I pulled over, turned on my flashers and got out. Popped the hood, turned the key and the engine has a bad knock and is running very rough. I shut it off, called my son for a tow and waited for him to show up.

My son is a heavy duty diesel mechanic and he brought his OBDII code reader with him. It didn't tell us anything. Whatever it is, it's serious, and with 170,000 miles on it, I have probably gotten my money's worth out of it. Wouldn't you know it, it has a full tank of gas, too.

Of course, I have the Harley and my '91 Bronco Eddie Bauer Edition with a 5.8L V8, an intermittent ignition problem (it likes to die when it's real hot) and a dead a/c system that requires R-12 refrigerant. I guess I'll fix the Bronco and then decide what to do with the Pontiac.

Just my luck.

Sorry to hear about the problem with the Grand Am. That is the way it goes sometimes.

My wifes car bit the dust a couple months ago, it still runs fine, but the body is rusting off it from the salt here. My truck is getting the same way and needs some serious attention before this winter arrives.

CJ....well they say bad things come in 3's. So you are through the worst of it.

1)Health Issue
2) Bike down
3) Car dies

So now something good will happen. I think it will be a great time in the Redwoods, or winning the lottery.

Or maybe BD's iron won't work at the motel and we will get to watch him squirm in wrinkled shirts!

170,000 miles on a American made car. I think you got a good deal out of it and your monies worth.

Smooth as silk, my friend. Put a few miles on it today, going to pick up some stuff for the Bronco.

Some of the 4 cyl engines had head gasket problems around that year of car. Replaced one the car my wife drives for work.

Sorry you seem to be dealt a bad hand this year CJ. I always try to be an optimist, but if the same were hapening to me, I'd be bummed as well. Been down the road of blowing a motor on a high mileage vehicle, and for me, I ended up putting a new motor in it. May not have been the wisest choice but it bought me some time and eliminated the pain of disposing of a vehicle I just bought that was now worthless. Whatever you decide, just do it and move on without second guessing yourself. That is the sure path to depression, and ya can't go back and do it over anyway!
I guess that's my way of saying chin up son! You'll get through it!

Mine has the 3.4L V6 and it had a problem with the upper intake manifold gasket. I had to fix that about 3 years ago.

I was just griping out loud, just can't seem to catch a break this year.
