Nomad not starting
After a nice ride this morning I put the nomad away in the garage and left it for the day. After going out in the late afternoon and trying to start it, I am a little stumped.
There is no activity whatsoever when I turn the key. No lights, no stereo, no horn, nothing. I hooked the bike up to a battery booster after checking to make sure all the fuses were okay and still absolutely nothing. I have a feeling it is the ignition switch as it was sounding a little grindy the last couple of days. It's also not the kickstand switch or the bike kill switch. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. JJ Login or Register to Remove Ads |

check your ground and hot connection on the battery and your ground on the frame. If ok then pull the battery and take it to be load tested. A shorted battery will be completely dead, won't respond to a charger and that sounds like your type problem. I'd say the switch would be intermittent before it failed completely.

That sounds like a good start.......I'll poke around at it tomorrow morning after I get home from work.......
If I was to hook up the battery cables directly to the battery charger, would that possibly tell me if the battery was the culprit? |

The switches tend to wear after a while, I have had the contacts stick in mine before. You can open them up and clean them, but be careful of the small parts in there.

this is a typical nomad issue, check the electrical connection where the wiring plugs into your clutch fluid resivor, the plug vibrates loose and shuts off all electrical activity. this is usually an issue if you play with the bars/headlight, or have had the steering on full lock.

About a year ago I had the same thing happen to me, while on a trip. I unplugged/ clean and replugged everything I could think of. It fixed the problem. Not too sure what is was. Check all ground wires, and check to make sure the connections are clean. Good luck! Let us know what you find out!

Looks like a 1500 to me. Do you have other keys hanging with it's key? It could be anything, like the clutch lever safety, but you would have tail lights with the key ON.
Did you check as Cj said the main fuse it's next to the battery in a holder there, not in the fuse box.

Looks like an 08 1600 to me. Check the ground at the rear of the engine. After that try the connections on the battery. It could be
(but not likely from the symptoms) a dirty ignition switch. But it could be something involved in the trike conversion. Good Luck and keep up updated. MT

I'm with Cactusjack. The 30 amp main fuse in the relay (behind the coolant tank) feeds the white wire to the ignition switch. Mine was covered in the green corrosion and cause all kind of starting, intermittent problems. I cleaned all the terminals where the harness plugs into the relay and it fixed my problems.

So it doesn't have the side mounted key switch. That type switch is killed by a key fob with other keys.

Sorry fellas.....It's a 2008 1600cc
I checked all the connections under the seat and found the 30 amp fuse in there. It's spotless as are the other two fuses I found under there as well. Voyager is dropping off his voltage tester tonight and I'll try the battery tomorrow morning when I get home from work.......I never realized how many damn fuses there are on that bike but I'm starting to find out.....I'll check that wiring by the clutch oil reservoir as well......I'll keep you posted.... |
