Oil Change but curious about .....

I will have to do this in 3 parts. This is what the OLD filter looked like off the 2003 bike. Is it original?

and this is the color of the oil. It was VERY black. I think blacker than normal. I changed the oil from the SCREEN plug and it when without a hitch. Now, there was some filings in it but I would say it was never cleaned.

Your thoughts are needed.

I dont know if the 1500's use the same filter as the 1600's. The OEM part number for my 1600 is 16097-004. Your filter appears to have a hex on the end for a wrench ? The OEM 1600 filter does not. I would say if your filter does not say Kawasaki on it then it is not the original ? Hopefully a 1500 owner will chime in.

That appears to be a K&N Oil Filter. They are known to have a hex nut fitting on the end. I use the K&N Oil filters all the time. The purpose of the hex nut fitting on the end is to eliminate the need for an oil filter wrench.

There is no way of knowing if it is the original filter if you are not the original owner.
I presume you bought it recently and this is your first oil change ? I figure the last owner knew he was going to sell the bike and left the oil change longer than normal ?

I am one that believes you cannot change oil too often (within reason).

If it were my bike, I would only put a few more miles on it and then change the oil (far ahead of schedule) to re-check for "filings" and the oil sediment. I would think of it as a "flushing" of the system just to make sure.

Oil isn't that expensive compared to other problems that could occur.

Also, some years of Nomads require a filter with a release-valve to protect from too much oil-pressure. Don't remember what year(s); but I know some do. Kawa fixed the problem; but there are bikes out there that were sold and have that particular problem. I know some of the '04's had the problem. Mine wasn't one of them.

My question is: if you learned that it was the originial filter (never removed in many years) or if you learned that the filter had been changed 20 times since it was new, what difference would it make now? You took out oil filter that needed to be changed and put new in. That is the best you could do in either situation.

Was the 2003 the one that had the recall on the filter because of to much pressure? Does this use a replaceable canister filter inside it? If so It may have been one of the recall replacements. Not sure if you can get any replacement canisters for that except through Kawasaki.

I know some of the 2004's had the problem, and you still have to buy the filter with the pressure-valve. Not sure if anyone else makes them.

Fortunately, mine was not one of them.

Ok, had a closer look at this Oil Filter. It has 2 notches in in and it looks like it comes in 1/2. I have tried with a pipe wrench and it will not budge. Any suggestions on getting it apart?

I took your first picture and flipped it up side down, then tried to blow it up to where I could read what it said. I couldn't see it too clearly, but it looks like it said that the filter canister is reusable, to open it up and change the cartridge that's on the inside.
How to get it apart?????????? I haven't got a clue with out seeing it in person.

Id run some Seafoam through the crankcase regardless for a few hundred miles and then change the oil again.
