Ride to Morganza this Saturday

If they begin opening the Morganza Spillway late this week, I will be taking another ride up there Saturday morning....weather permitting. It will be an historic event with this being the second opening since it was built in 1954. It has only opened once since then in 1973. If any of you guys would want to ride along, post up.

As of now it looks like me and some other of the Alexandria thugs will make the ride to Morganza to meet up with you.Do you have any eta info yet?

Nothing yet Steve. I'm watching to see when the beginning of the opening will occur. It could be anywhere from Saturday to Tuesday. I'll let you know more as info is made available.

Bobby, Your best bet would be to head down I-55 to US-84. Cross the river at Natchez and head South on US-61 through St. Francisville. Turn right on LA-10 just south of St. Francisville and cross the river via the new bridge into New Roads. The ferry has shutdown and the bridge opened early because of the high river. Continue straight after crossing the bridge and you will come to LA-1. Continue North for a few miles and you will be in Morganza. The spillway is just a mile or two out of town. About 175 miles from Terry.

Cajunrider, sounds interesting to see that. It is about 180 miles for me. If I knew what time I could meet with some of ya'll Sat. morning I think I am in.

Frank passed on to me today that LA-1 will be closed when the Morganza Spillway is being opened. I'm dissapointed but I can understand why. There is absolutely no place for spectators to watch. There are no shoulders on LA-1 at the spillway and the large boat launches adjacent to the structure are underwater. So......looks like it's a no go to watch the opening. If they wait until Monday or later to begin opening it we could still meet up and ride in the area. It is a sight to behold. Everybody who is interested in meeting up keep a close eye on the news. If I see that the opening will be Saturday I will not ride up.

We are going to cancel out if the spillway opens Sat.If they close Hwy 1 we would just have to turn around and go back and couldn't even get into New Roads where we were going to eat lunch.If this bunch can't eat things go downhill fast.:)

Same here Steve. Sattefield's is a great place to eat in New Roads. Great food, great atmosphere, and a beautiful view of False River. We dine there every time we are in New Roads.

Cajun2wheels and his group would be coming from Alexandria. I don't think the Morganza will open on Saturday because the Governor wanted 3 days notice to be sure that everyone in the path would have time to evacuate. Where would you be coming in from and on what highway?

Sorry I missed your last post, reading to fast i guess. Heading overthere would be from southeast texas, from Hwy12 or I-10 then snaking up from there. if ya'll still want to ride let me know I got a buddy that works with me (leos 2006 nomad) that might want to go.

I saw this spillway on the news this morning while getting a haircut. The Army Corps of Engineers is trying to decide whether or not to open it up to alleviate flooding New Orleans when the river crests there.

Governor just announced the Morgaza spillway will be opened tomorrow.There was no exact time frame at this time.
