Knock in engine
I have a 09 Nomad 1700, recently I noticed a knock in the engine until it warmed up, can only be heard when the engine is cold and under load. The dealer said there is nothing wrong. Anyone else had this problem?

Knock in engine
I, have a 2010 Nomad and it has a knocking sound when first started. Sounds like it is in the engine but it is not. not sure where it is coming from. The bike runs good and I do not have any problems with it. Bike had 12000 miles when I had to stop rideing last year. The knock or noise does not sound the same all the time.

One of the benefits of disconnecting the solenoids on my '05 was the engine no longer revved way up when first starting it cold - hated the initial clatter but I try not to let it idle too low either.
Even without the solenoids though, there is still some chatter on top of the engine at all times. How are the oil pumps on the Kawi v-twins? Good pressure at low rpm or no?

Are you letting the bike idle for two minutes or so before riding. I have an '08 and my owners manual says to let it idle for two minutes before riding. This includes if you park for a length of time and then ride again. All Nomads have the knock when they first start up but it goes away within a few seconds. Just start it up let it idle for the two minutes and then ride. Shouldn't have any problems doing it that way.

Mine hase it's own little noises too..... But never any problems with it.
I have replaced the counter balance rubbers and that made it quite down alot.. Still have the piston slap, that makes a bit of a knock till it warms up and then pretty much goes away.

same problem here '08 nomad does it for about 1 min on all cold start ups. i came up with my own theory that the oil settles at the bottom and need to make it throughout the motor??? who knows if i am correct but it works in my mind :) oil level is fine....i do what alabamarider does, let it warm up for 1-2minutes. its getting to be riding season for us in new england (well true season, i did ride every month except january) ha

knock takes place on my 99 nomad, after start-up & during the first 20 - 30 feet of travel . after that , smoothes out & runs like a great big sewing machine. minimal top end chatter on deceleration at 6mph till 0. i think the lube oil return system needs some type of mod' .

Second dealer says it's carbon build-up in the engine (I baby it too much). Thanks for everyone's input.

clean the throttle body with a cotton swab and carb cleaner. long wood swabs were hard to find for me so I doubled over a Q-Tip and jambed the double haft into the end of a straw being careful not to scrub so hard as to pull the ends out and drop them into the engine.
