Air cleaner assembly

I am toying with the idea of replacing my 7" air intake with either a Thunder Mfg. teardrop air cleaner

http://www.thundermfg.com/store/inde...ct_detail&p=21

with this insert:

http://www.thundermfg.com/store/inde...t_detail&p=119

or a Kuryakyn Hypercharger:

http://www.thundermfg.com/store/inde...ct_detail&p=87

with the same insert as above.

I am interested in comments from those with either of these setups. If you have a hypercharger, I assume all that's needed to make the butterflies functional is a vacuum connection? Can I use my cruise control vacuum line, or should I take it directly off the throttle body?

Also, pros/cons of either style unit. Thanks!

They both look good Scott. I have a friend with a Nomad, and he has the Hypercharger. He is tall, and with his long legs, the HC is a non issue hitting his leg/knee. But, either one you get, you'll also need one or the other of these........

Thanks. I did know I needed an adapter, depending on which way I go.

I'm 6'1" with a 32" inseam, so it (HC) probably won't affect me much.

Is the HC noticeably quieter than an open filter?

On his bike, he has the HC, PCIII, and V&H with the ultimate baffles
On mine, I have the Thunder Stealth, TFI, and V&H with the ultimate baffles

His exhaust note is quiet a bit louder, and at idle, his butterflies clap open and closed, sounds like an old wristwatch ticking, but under throttle, they stay open. That's the only difference I can hear between our bikes. Before the UBs, they sounded exactly the same.

I have a Pro Hypercharger that I got from a Nomad owner not far from me. I have the instructions. You don't need anything else if it's either the 9404 or the 9408 as the backing plate that is bolted on in place of the plastic factory backing plate is included. So NO you do not need that thunder plate to use the Hypercharger. I have the unit and all instructions to take if from FACTORY to this new one. Only thing I may have to do is move out my right floorboard if my knee hits it (I'm 6ft so may or may not?) I will be installing it either this week or weekend.
So with either you will be fine with just the Hypercharger fwiw.

Scott,

The Hypercharger I am considering is the one in the link in my original post. I don't believe it is the "Pro" version. Must just be the "amateur" one.

CJ are you going to get the Nomad/Vulcan specific one? or the one you list which is for an HD (if I'm not mistaken). The Nomad one from the company website (both the regular and the PRO) has the adapter plate included to make it work with the Nomad/Vulcan 1500 FI. Now from what I see in the pricing you have listed the Thunder adapter plate and the HD type hypercharger you have in the link means you will actually be paying MORE then one from the company directly that is made for your bike!!! The base and Pro version both come with the adapter plate (when I checked the website) and the instructions for that part are identical. So unsure if your saving anything going this way??

Scott

Addition: CJ this one has all the parts (except the one vacuum hose) and you maybe able to get it for a great price, if you wanted? Just fyi.

Here's my HC with the Thunder adapter. Standard HD HC with the Kuryakyn 8498 trap door and Thunder adapter. Works great, I connected the butterfly vacuum to the same port as the old reed valve's were connected to. Sticks out with the trap door about 1/2 inch more than the stock dog bowl. I like it, a little throttle noise but it sound good. The only problem I had was the fitting on the Thunder adapter for the intake air temp sensor had strange threads so I ran a tap thru it.

I'm not going to be doing this anytime soon. I crashed my bike on the way home tonight. So an air cleaner is the least of my worries now. :(" title="" border="0"/>

Yes, Scott I know that air cleaner isn't very important now. Man I wish that hadn't happened to you. Be sure and let us know how it comes out with the insurance adjuster. I wrecked my Goldwing, actually got hit by a car. I didn't think the damage was all that bad. But it took a lot of money to fix it again. Of course insurance paid for it. I did all the replacement work myself. When I talked to the insurance company and told them how much it would cost for replacement parts he thought the bike was all torn up. I rode it over and showed him. They wrote me out a check.
