Lock Tumbler in Steering Lock

Hello All, here is an interesting question.

I have had the tumbler in the steering lock come out. It still works but WON'T say in the steering housing. I have looked everywhere for some sort of clue at to why it won't stay in. Can someone shed some light on this? Thanks

It's been my experience that lock tumbler cylinders like that have a spring-loaded tab that holds them in place. Usually at the far end of the cylinder from the key opening. If the cylinder comes out, do you see anything like that?
