Putting HD Tourpak back together

Ok I stripped my Tourpak I got off Ebay down today and sent it to the painter said I would have it back by weekend
Has anyone did this and put it back together ? The hinge brackets and upper latches on the lid do you have to use brad type rivets or can you use small screws and nuts and still get the lid to close with the seal or do you put the button head of screw on inside and maybe a chrome nut on out side ??? Did anyone up grade the latches and hinges while putting theirs back together.? Mine is a 1995 King Tour Pak the has the older latches and hinges.

I'd recommend you stop by a H.D. dealer and buy the upgraded hinges. They look so much better than the plain looking ones on now.

I restored an old HD tour pack and used small bolts to hold the hinges. I bought new HD latches which are actually pretty reasonable.

My hinges have small rivets, while the latches have small screws holding them on.

Tom, I don't see why you couldn't use stainless steel bolts and nuts. Should work pretty good.

I think the rivets are available at the HD store, or they come with new hinges as well. Id try to stick with the rivets. The bolts are so small and they can work loose much easier.

I think the new aftermaket hinges use screws to mount I will have to check to be sure but I may use them after 1st of the month.

I used small bolts to re-attach the hinges and they have never come loose. The HD rivets are a major pain to work with.

You may have to widen the holes a bit. Don't force the screws.

Nice tutorial Pete!! Well laid out and great explanations on the project. It reminds me very much of when I did a complete disassembly of my Venture trunk, and then built/fab'd the rack. I made the mistake of welding the whole rack together, where you made three pieces and bolted them together. Way better approach than welding.
later.

Stainless steel bolts and nuts on mine. Should of bought new hinges but that will be next. Also it made a difference which hinge went where. Had them swapped and the lid didn't quite fit right, may have a slightly tweaked hinge. The extra storage is great.

Thanks very much, Ricky. Basically, I can't weld so I bolt.....
