Thats a neat way to get some pork in the freezer, I'll bet it wouldn't be a cheap way to hunt them though.

Been hog hunting in Texas. A small version of a sherman tank is what they are. That is some amazing shooting from a helicopter.

Its kind of hard keeping the weight on in normal conditions. I didn't know how hard it was to outrun a whirlybird until I received a surveilance video from cousin Porky, says it was a true battle and they all vowed to stick together no matter what the outcome. Bless his heart. I just got home from rummaging through the neighborhood restaurants. I'm feeling like a nap but I just can't get those images out of mind. Well, maybe, I'll think about the family later. Is that mud?

I think it's criminal and even cowardly. I don't care what anyone says... I'm a little sick and tired of seeing how human beings treat animals for whatever misguided reasons they offer up. pu***es.

Even though it is my understanding that the wild hog population is out of control, I don't see the sport in shooting them from a helicopter.

The Feral hog usually has three litters per year with about 8 on each litter. They are very prolific. They cost farmers hundreds of thousands of dollars each year by totally destroying crops and/or fields. They are a prime source of disease and parasites. The problem is so bad that hunting from a helicopter is the best and safest way to try to control them. These animals are very vicious and fast. Like Waterman said, they are like a tank.

Pigs, given the opportunity will eat humans, my dad lost a chunk of his leg to a "tame" pig. It is not a stretch to imagine an 1800 pound hungry hog eating a child, or adult. |

Dave and Michael,
I don't think that this is for sport. It is just for total control of their population. I've been in areas that have a real issue with feral hogs. They do tremendous amounts of damage around the area. They also have a tendacy to push native wildlife out. Hunting alone will not control their population as they are difficult to hunt and they are prolific reproducers. Talk to farmers in the area that have them bad. They are costing them literally thousands of dollars. In reality, they are not true wildlife, they are hogs that have escaped and are reproducing in the wild. Many people claim that they are the property of the state and regulated as such. However, it is the farmers that carry the brunt for feeding these animals. Many times people call hunters savages or worse. The main reason for hunting is to 1) control the population and 2) put some food on the table. Yes it is a sport but those are the two main reasons why I hunt and many others do as well. Have either of you seen animals dying from disease from over-population?? It is not a pretty sight. The first year of hunting deer, they had an over-population of whitetail in the area and many people were pleading for the game and parks to really increase the tags available. They didn't. Right after hunting season, blue tongue hit the deer herd. In one small field, we drug over 30 dead or dying deer out of the field as the farmer (good friend) harvested the field. Again, the video that you saw was just an eradication program. Nothing sport about it but it is what it is and sometimes it is needed.

I too hunt to help put meat on the table, abiding by all provincial laws here is still quite challenging to become successfull.
Even with the helicopter Im sure he went through a pile of ammo.

I'm not against the control, I've read where they are out of control. It just does not seem right to me to be shooting them from a helicopter. But if that's what it take to control them.....
Too bad we couldn't just round them all up and send 'em off to the middle east! |

After hunting them several times; yes, the helicopter is really what it takes to get them under control. You just can't cover the area that is needed because of time, roads and terrain.

Feral Hog Hunting Texas Style
Feral hogs have taken over prime hunting swamps in all directions around my home. A 350 pounder charged a close friend of mine while he was rabbit hunting several years ago. He ran off 3 rounds of 12 ga #6 shot at the charging hog and naturally it didn't phase it until after it knocked him down breaking his leg and inflicting two large gashes on his hip requiring over 100 stitches. A buddy hunting with him couldn't shoot the hog while it was goring him out of fear of hitting Mark. After the very fast attack, the hog walked about 5 feet away and dropped. They are very dangerous and unpredictable.
