Installed intake mod

I agree with what you guys have been saying about the Nomads gasping for air. I installed the Chuckster Dual Plate right side mod with the K&N filter this afternoon. Wow, what a difference! I reset the #1 and #2 pots on the TFI to 3:15 and 6:00 respectively. If I behave, the mpg's might increase as the #1 pot had been at 4:00 for several months. The #2 had been at 5:00 from day one but needed a small increase after opening the intake. Chuckster's dual plate mod is the way to go if you want to keep the stock look with the dog dishes. It's also very easy to go back to stock if the bike needs to go to the dealer for engine related warranty repairs. Very nice intake kit. That should be it for performance mods with the intake, TFI, and aftermarket pipes. Now I can turn my attention to more bling. Also installed Chuckster's oversized lowers. I went for a short 70 mph ride this evening and it does appear to reduce the buffeting.

Slap some desert dawg crash bar covers on the bike and gain a little more MPG's. I know it doesn't look right, but i get apx 2 MPG's out of running them.

Sounds like a good deal Mitch. Be sure and let us know how the MPG's go.

Well done Mitch.

I was involved with Joe in coming up with the dual plate concept and in keeping the stock dog bowls on the 1600's.
He really spent a lot of time on this mod, especially since he did not have a 1600 to use as model.
Some don't realize what Joe goes through to help all of us.

Good job Buddy.

Y'all did a good job with the double plate design DK. Joe's work is so precise. If he wasn't so far away, I'd highly recommend him for all of the machine work for our plant.

Installed intake mod

Didn't someone on this forum do an intake mod but with the filter and dog bowl on the left side and keep the right side intact as well as the crossover tube? I thought about going that way and leave the ICS in the right side. Call me crazy but without the ics I don't like the way the bike starts and idles until temps get right. Maybe not adjusting the idle correctly and I also had a tfi installed but mileage dropped up to 6 mpg with the tfi as compared to without and adjusted that thing everyway I knew how and still didn't get the mpg that I get when running a stock setup. Thats why I thought about maybe a Cobra fi2000r, left side air mod with dog bowl to see what that may do but can't remember who had a left side air mod on here. Any help would be appreciated.

Butch did you just set the TFI by the book numbers and on a mostly stock bike?

And there are 2x9inch right side filters where you can still run the ISC's if you want, but they will be real noisey.

The crossover tube is the problem. No matter what you do to the left side, you can only move as much air as the crossover tube allows. It creates a bottleneck. If you are going to spend the time and money to change the intake, you may as well get some additional performance for your efforts and open up the right side. The added benefits of increased airflow is well worth a couple of minutes of rough idle when the engine is cold. As soon as the engine warms up, you'll forget all about the solenoids anyway.

I wonder if that is really true Scott. If one measures the total volume of the two throttle bores to determine the total volume and then measure the cross over tubes diameter or volume I wonder how much restriction it really happening? The cross over tube would have be be less than the combined throttle bore volume for performance to suffer.

Granted the air in the cross over tube is warmed by the engine and thus would theoretically contain less O2 by area...

Gadgets site has one guy saying he got tired of the extra noise the right side K&N emitted and put it on the left side and didn't notice a loss of HP... Just wonderin... ???

Would it be worth it to do the dual plate mod with stock exhaust? I have the Cobra FI2000 so I can adjust accordingly but if it can't exhale all that extra volume it doesn't seem worth it.

Yea I wanted to try and keep the ics but also keep the noise to a minimum. I may just go to the filters on both sides to keep the same looks for both sides but as of now I am leaning to the left side mod if I can figure out who had the left side modded and keep the looks just to see if I would notice any performance difference. I am like Blowndodge in the thinking that the 2 throttle body intake holes wouldn't be any bigger volume wise as the crossover tube is so would just like to give it a try and see. The tfi was adjusted in and out over and under and all I could get out of it was at the most 35 mpg. Granted it run pretty good with it on, probably better than stock but to me at a cost and the cost difference wasn't worth it in my opinion and thats why I was thinking of going the Cobra route with the modded filter on the left. I don't ride hard and when I have needed to get and go I haven't had any issues with the stock setup but if I had alot more pep I might see a telltale difference. But I don't know what and how to get the left side modded and with what.

I did Jamie24's bike I put chuckster's plate with a 9" filter on the right side, the left side stayed the same and added a tfi he said his mpg dropped from about 40 mpg to about 35 mph but he could run regular gas with no pinging. We just added a set of Jardine rumbler pipes to his bike and now he says that the mpg is as good or better than it was when stock and the performance is much better. I have the same set up on my bike except I have V&H baggers, I just made a 400 mile trip and averaged 41mpg.

I am looking forward to our South Central Nightmare ride at Talimena next week. I want to talk to Cajunrider, Oldbikers, and Jamie about their intake mods and those Jardine pipes. I am wanting to do my bike, maybe at a "KNOW" session.

All I want is more power, improve gas mileage, keep my solenoids, and have a cool sound. :)

Bill, The 7" plates require removing the ICS's. You can go with the 9" Spectre kit and keep the solenoids.
