oil screen extra oring
Pulled out oil screen for first oil change had extra oring about the same size as a penny it was on the outside of the screen near the cap plug that holds it all in. I do have the oring that seals the plug the spring, the washer that slides over the screen and the grommet type oring that attaches to end the screen. Which way does the oil flow inside out or outside in. Any ideas thanks. Might help to say 2008 1600. What i am concerned about is where the oring came from and if there is one in it's place.

papat ....Oil flow is from the crankcase into the oil screen to the oil pump and then the filter. The screen will keep the "bigger junk", like your extra o-ring, from the getting to the oil pump. Anything making it through the oil screen will be picked up at the oil filter. I'm not sure what your riding exactly, but that is the oil flow for my 1500 and probably 1600's to. :)

Lots of people have found junk trapped inside this screen. Usually it is bits of gasket sealer and aluminum casting flash, which is what I have found in mine. (Just some tiny bits in my case.) Others have found bits of plastic bag like what parts and gaskets come wrapped in. So far the is the first time I've heard of something like an o-ring found in there though.
The oil flows into the screen sleeve before being sucked into the oil pump. I have pulled this plug and screen out at every oil change since the bike was new. (I've done every one and it's never once been into any shop except my own garage.) I've done over a dozen oil changes since 8/15/03 when the bike was purchased & it now has about 30,300 miles on the clock. About half the time I find some tiny bit or bits of something in it. Mostly it has been bits of rubber-like blob, which is evidently gasket sealer. The largest was less than 1/10" in the largest dimension and maybe 0.010" thick. Why am I mentioning all this here--and on at least three other MC sites as well? If there is an engine siezure someday, and somebody on a Vulcan gets hurt, and it's traced to lack of oil caused by blockage of the screen by factory debris or similar, I want as much documentation out there on the web about what has been found in the past. Also, the manual doesn't advise checking this screen at every oil change, and IT SHOULD. In addition to checking for debris, this plug allows old oil to drain from the engine that won't drain when just the other plug is pulled. |

I've done all my on oil changes myself,(except for the first one at 600 miles), and every one has been thru the oil pre-filter screen. I still find little bits of gasket material, tiny bits of bronze and aluminum. On the last one (7th oil change) I found a bit of plastic bag about the size of a thumb nail. Yes, EVERY oil change is through the pre-filter screen!!!!!!! And like CQ said, you can get more of the old oil out than you can get out thru the crankcase drain plug, especially if you drain while bike is on the side-stand.

Same here....At my 3,500 mile change, I found gasket material and sealant. No alloy material. I've drained it every time from the screen since then and haven't found anything but oil. The dealer did the 600 mile change and said that they drained it from the screen plug. I not so sure about that one.

The O ring was probably one that got away from the guy putting it in. Good thing the screen is there to stop things like that.
