Minor Starting Problem

When I start my 2005 1600(7000 miles)I have to keep the rpms up for 30 seconds or so or it will not idle.I usually just pull the choke knob out to keep it at a higher idle.I have cleaned the throttle bodies and adjusted the idle speed. When the engine is warm the idle is perfect. Is this just the nature of the beast? This is happening with the outside temperature at 75-80 degrees.

All stock bike? Looks like it in the pic.

Probably it wants more fuel, since it is overly lean as a guess.

My bike is modded a bit and hasn't got the ISC (idel solenoid controlls) anymore and it never needs the so called choke pulled. If has a fuel modual that adds that little bit of fuel though.

Try this little experiment a few times cold. Turn on the key wait for the pump to finish and turn the key off and back on, when the speedo settles start the bike as normal and see it is is any better.

If that works get a cobra or TFI fuel modual. Since you just got the bike, something I just found out, I wiuld pull the plugs to check the gap and clean them too. Do not wire brush the plugs to clean them, use a carb cleaner and a finger nail, mand clean the threads. Before you put them back in antiseize the plug threads and since you live in a wet state, peel the rubber ends off the plug wires and look for green mung on the brass clips

If there is any green mung clean that with carb cleaer and a q tip. We just can't have little green plants growin in there see!

The use some dielectric grease up in there on that brass.

before you install the plugs make sure the plug well at lf ft and rt rr are clean, if anything is there at all crank the engine over to blow it away with no plug in at all or at least not in these 2 plug ports with the deep wells.

A fuul mod with the rest of the bike as is won't get you much more power and the book settings for that will be all wrong, but never the less setting up the modual will get you a cooler running engine, and maybe get you off hi test gas.

This will all come as you need it.

c2w,
what you are describing is exactly the way things should work. The first start of the day and any start during the day where the bike has sat for say an hour or more is made easier through use of the ____________ (insert what ever title you want to use: fast idle control or choke or throttle enriching device).
On my 07 pulling that knob out fully yields a idle speed of about 1600 vs the stumbling and stalling speed of 750 that happens with out it on a cold start. Where a "cold start" means the engine is not at operating temperature (not meaning that it is 40 degrees outside). After about 30 seconds to a minute pushing the knob in gets me a idle between 900-1,000 and after the bike is throughly warmed up my idle hovers around 1,100-1,150.
Many people say "I never use that knob! Just crack the throttle a bit then blip it 2-3 times once it starts and it keeps running just fine" and they are correct. That works but I believe that racing a cold engine is bad for the engine so I use the knob. Hey, that is what it is there for!

Never hurt to use half a can of Seafoam at your next fill up.

Good to know Trosco. My buddy said he had seen a post in another forum where low battery voltage may cause the same symptom.I have been having battery problems and installed a new battery today.I cranked her up without touching the throttle and I thought it was going to die but the rpms caught up and it idled fine.I have only had the bike for a short time and replaced the antifreez, changed the oil, installed a new battery and rear tire. The weather is getting cooler so I'm ready to rock and roll. Thanks for the info.

Hey C2W.. mine sometimgs acts the same way. Our Nomad's "choke" mechanism in the injectors is very archaic at best. Mine will either do what yours does or sometimes the exact opposite. I'll start it and it will have a nice 1000 rpm idle and then race up to about 2K for about 10 senconds then go back down. Has done this since new. I have a TFI on it and it still does it somewhat.....

I just consider her cranky!

Minor Starting Problem

Update:I have had the new battery for about a week now and my start up idle problems are history.I believe the old battery with the lower than normal voltage caused my problem. If you are having start up idle problems even after a good throttle body cleaning a bad battery may be causing the problem.
