Fancy air intakes

Okay, I don't know if this has been discussed here before, but I think the stock round, chrome air intake covers need some dressing up. They look so plain. I don't mean the "Live to Ride, Ride to Live" Harley stuff. Just something to dress them up. Even a "95 cubic inches" decal or something. I'm not artistic, so I wouldn't try painting or pinstriping them. I can't draw a straight line with a ruler.

How about it? Has anyone got any ideas or suggestions?

I tried painting a design on mine but it didn't stick even though i used plastic specific paint. Maybe engraving a design on it would look OK. I may try that sometime in the future.

Just a thought CJ.

I have a Thunder round air kit that has an insert over the center of the aircleaner that has 95 cubic inches deeply engraved on it. It's actually a flat plate that has 4 holes for screws at 3-7/8" bolt circle centerline. The outside diamter is 4-1/4" they are $24.95 ea.

I'm not sure if they'll fit onto the stock aircleaner but if the bump in the face of it lines up withe edge of a 4-1/4 circle, it might look pretty good on there. Of course, you'd have to drill and tap 4 smalll holes into the stock cover.

That sounds nice. Can you post a picture?

That looks like it might work. I measured the "bump" in the center of the housing at it's just a shade under 4-1/2". I couldn't tell from your pictures, but wouldn't I also have to drill a center hole for the screw that attached the housing to the intake assembly?

I can't find on Thunder's website. Would you have the part # for it?

Update: found the part # 10706 $28.95.

If the bump is over 4-1/4", it might just work.

Why not cut out a piece of cardboard at 4-1/4" OD and find out how close it will be?

The center hole is under the insert.

I've been looking at some of this guys stuff. Not much on the "flames" for the windshield, but I like it on the headlight bucket and the air cover. Since it's just decals...doubt there's much difference between the 1500 & 1600.

I dunno, he doesn't seem to know the difference between a windshield and an air filter cover. ???

Okay, I happened to find a lid from a peanut jar with a 4.25" diameter, and used it to see how one of these plates would fit. The filter cover surface isn't perfectly flat, but I think the 4 mounting screws would hold it close enough to still look good. Now I have another dilemma.

The ideal way to mount these inserts would be to drill 4 holes and use SS socket-head bolts to mount it to the cover. This would work because the mounting hole for the cover assembly would be recessed behind the insert. However, this won't work because there would be no way to get to the 4 nuts behind the cover once the cover is attached to the intake assembly. I really don't want to use sheet metal screws to hold the inserts on.

One solution would be to drill a hole in the center of the insert and use a loner screw to mount the cover assembly. I don't think the cover itself is thick enough to tap threads in. Short of welding nuts to the back of the cover, I'm not sure what else to do.

So, any of you creative types have any suggestions? Time to think outside the box. Thanks!
