time for tire?

What's new is new, what's used is used. How many miles are on that tire? What kind of tire is it?

Tread depth is measured in 32nds of inches in the USA. There is a trick with a Lincoln penny, but I have no idea how to convert that to a coin you might have.

The best bet is go to Canadian Tire and for a couple bucks buy a tread measuing depth gage.

Another way is there is wear bars built into the tire and if wear has made these flush to the tread, then the tire is dead.

I really don't get you can't look at a near to dead tire and not be able to tell.

Also somewhere on a side wall is a date code. It is located inside a oval depression, and should have 4 digits depressed deeper. Say you find this oval and it says (0434), that means 2004 week 34 of the possible 52.

More or less a mc rear tire on a Nomad is dead from around 7,000 miles to 9,000 miles. Not many guys get past that 9,000 miles and I don't get close. I think I ride just like my Old Grannie would like too. I ride alone, I am 58 years old, and I got nuthin to prove to no body.

time for tire?

I replaced my tires a couple weeks ago at 20000 kms and like the new Avon Cobras.

2008 Canadian Nomad manual states the following min. thread depth:

Front: 1mm (0.04")
Rear: 2 mm (0.08") under 130 kph (80 mph) or 3 mm (0.12") over 130 kph (80 mph)

Also inspect your tires visually for cracks and cuts. The stock tires were very noisy, I sometimes taught they would rupture while riding on rough surfaces at high speeds in our last trip.

I posted some photos with new tire specs (the stock back tire is hard to find unless you go with the Brick Stones)

Hope this helps,

Elvis

This thread was on hear last week. It shows a worn out (or close enough) Bridgestone.
I just replaced my stock tire last week with a Dunlop Elite 3 at roughly 11,500 km or so. It was slightly worse then the one in the photo, the wear stripes wear barlely there anymore.
If in dought ask other riders or a dealer or two.

Here's a picture of my old rear Dunlop D404 with 13,645 miles vs the new one I installed a few minutes ago. I usually change the rear at about 11,000 but this one went a little longer. I didn't want to ride in the rain with it that worn. They seem to wear quickly once the tread is thin in the center.

With Avon Venom's I average 20 - 25,000 km's on rear. That is @ 50 psi and I run them down to the wear bars. Front appears to be 2 to one rear. I will be trying the Dunflop E3 bias ply this time.

I don't understand why a new tire would need to be replaced. You should have asked him why he thought that. On my original Bridgestone I got 9523 miles out of it. Replaced it with a Dunlop Elite 3 and really like it. Rides smooth and no noise. Will be replacing the front with the Dunlop Elite 3 as soon as I get some more miles on it. It is going to make it to probably 11,000 miles. I expect to get at least 15,000 to 18,000 out of the Dunlop's.
