Waterproofing

I am usually a fair weather rider but when you plan overnight rides sometimes you can't avoid the rain.

My jacket, pants, and helmet are waterproof but I am lookin for a way to waterproof my leather boots without buying new boots. My engine guard chaps help but I don't always have them on the bike.

I hear beeswax is a good way to go but I thought I would ask your input.

I am hoping there are some great outdoorsman here with great solutions.

Thanks in advance.

Don't know what brand of boots you use, but if they are a good quality boot, a lot of shoe repair/specialty shops can really waterproof them for a reasonable price. I thought they only sold waterproof boots in your neck of the woods? Kinda like they only sell cars with AC in Arizona right?

Mink Oil! Just rub it in and away you go. Used to use it on my hiking boots all the time.

I carry a pair of Lacrosse ankle rubber boots in my saddlebag. When the rain gear goes on, so do the booties. They are about $60 down here.

For those times the rain comes up unexpectedly I carry

(drum-roll please)

a couple of plastic shopping bags. They work fine for a short period.

They also make it easier to slide my size 12 1/2 boots through my rain pants.

Bees wax and mink oil work really well but they leave a sticky substance on the boots that will wear off in time but in the mean time it will attract a lot of dust and crap. I use a water proof spray (can't rember the name) that work well on leather boots. I get stuck in lots of rain storms and if your riding in the rain long enough your boots will soak up the water no matter what.

Never get wet feet since we never take off the engine guard covers but mink oil works well.

Here's what I use, CLICK ME. It has a Kawi part number, is made for leather used outdoors, and it does work really well, As long as your boots are black.... ;)

P.S. a little goes a long way

I havn't found anything yet that will keep my feet dry, except for rubber boots.
On my hunting and bike boots, Ive tried beeswax, silicone spray, Sno Seal, mink oil, dubbin, scotchgaurd, and a host of other stuff. Eventually I come home with wet feet. These products may slow the penetration of water but after a while it all fails for me.
The local dealer here has slip on rubber skins that you can put on over your boots, they cost about $15.00, I think I'll try those for this season.

Wow....great input everyone. I doubt I willl be caught hours on end in the rain as in this day and age I have been able to do a pretty good job of planning routes around bad weather using the internet and GPS (I hope that statement doesn't come back to haunt me).

To be quite frank....I will pull off the road after a couple hours if there is no end in sight.

I do not want to pack any additional items to get my feet dry so I think I will try the mink oil, beeswax, or maybe some of that Aquaseal on the Aerostich site that Chuckster linked me to.

1badbagger...They are a fairly good quality work boot by Georgia Boot. They are kind of like your favorite pair of jeans....they just fit right and are comfortable. nothing fancy to look at. I think they are good for a couple more seasons. They will eventually wear out but until they do I will try to keep them in good shape and waterproof.

I hope I don't have to test whatever solutions I try but if I do I will let you know how long it kept my feet dry.

Thanks Again All. I will keep checking this thread in case new ideas show up.

Don't know what it is called or how well it would work on leather but there is a spray on to weather proof tents. It might work just as good on leather. Other than that I like Oldbikers thoughts on the matter.

Rubber socks!

Seriously, I would use the mink oil, and keep a couple of plastic bags on hand.
