fram ph7317 oil filter in my nad?

So I got the list of oil filters that can be used on my nomad off of the gadgetjq website.

It listed the following:

purolater pure on pl14610
mobil 1 m1-110
bosch 3323
walmart supertech st7317

I dropped in to partsource on the way home (live in Canada) and they didn't have any of those but did sell me a Fram PH7317.

They say it cross references to the bosch 3323 and will work fine.

Has anybody used fram filters in their nad and can confirm that this one is ok.

Darryl

It might work fine for a while. But nobody on here will endorse Fram. They suck as far as filters go since a change a while back. Probably the worst brand you could put on your Nomad. :-)

Looks like they're going back to the store then.

Any canucks fill me in on a spot where I can pickup one of the recommended brands?

I'll be making a trip to the states in a couple weeks so could wait till then to grab some if I need to but kind of wanted to get the oil change done this weekend.

I also recently picked up the Fram PH7317...but haven't used it yet....I know Fram isn't one of the desireable filters.....what is the actual issue with them? I will return mine too. I also picked up a CarQuest 85356 filter which is also suppose to work on the Nomad...can anyone comment on it? I am also in Canada and it is definitely more difficult to find one of the recommended filters easily. Thanks.

I used a Fram a couple of changes ago. And didn't have any problem. I am currently running the Purolator.

I believe the Fram's were being made with less filter material. IIRC

Fram is at the very bottom of my list for oil filters. It has very weak/cheap construction all around. Some things I look for are, the number of threads on the filter (more is better), a round rubber seal instead of a flat one. My personal faves are HiFlo HF204 and Emgo 10-82240. A lot of dealers offer one or the other and usually recommend them, even if they don't have them in stock.

I think the latest version of the WalMart brand is made off-shore and may not be still Champion so they are like a box of chocolates, "you never know what you are going to get" (quote from Forrest)

I've used them for the last couple changes, no issues. It's not like it's going to be on there for 100,000 miles...

the issue was that the end of the filter media was cardboard instead of metal, and separated, and got into the lube system. i don't no if that is factual but have read it several places on the internet. i had a filter come unglued and come apart on my v-max years ago. not a pretty thought. you always wonder how much got in the oil gallerys. i use the walmart 7317 on all my bikes with no issues. have for years. the plus is they only cost $2.84. alot of my friends use them. i have used walmart filters on all my cars for years. lots of trouble free miles. the ones i have seen cut apart are very well built.

I just changed my oil and ended up with a fram filter but the number was not 7317. I think it was 60.. something something. It was the only one they had on hand that day that would fit my bike.

Personally, My opinion is... no wait let me capitalize and underline that these are OPINIONS
Actually it's three opinions, first there are more than a few statements in every thread like this that sound like the person making them has actual, first hand knowledge and scientific proof for which oil or which filter or which do-dad you should use. They really don't! Please folks if you are passing along something that you read that someone else posted about something that their friend had seen on another site from an unverified source on the net..... well say it that way!
There is probably someone in one of these forums that is qualified to technically evaluate a oil or filter.... but I am not so here's my second opinion and again this is just my opinion: I don't think which Oil (as long as it compatible viscosity wise and additive wise with the mfgr's specs) or filter you use makes much difference! I think that any of them are good enough if you maintain regular intervals of oil and filter changes.
My third opinion is I think that every 3000 miles or 3 months is a good frequency and so that is what I mean when I say regular. That's what I do but I do some times take 4-5,000 miles trips and then I leave with fresh oil and filter and change them both when I get back. I think that is OK, but I have in mind that I would never run over 6,000 miles on the same oil and filter. And that just cause it's what I have decided. I followed this approach on my 1973 Yamaha 750 for over 80,000 miles, on my 1986 Goldwing for over 150,000 miles and now for 28,000 miles on my 07 Nomad and it has worked on all three brands and styles of bikes successfully.
I do know first hand that Fram and Purolator have both been in the filter business for over 50 years. I have used their products since the 1960's when I first started doing my own oil changes and I have had Fram & STC & Purolator and even Kawasaki's own brand filters on my Nomad..So I practice what I preach. But unless you are one of the people that knows me personally you really can't be sure any of this is factual so it is just info for you to consider while you make your own decision!

i use the fram extended gaurd XG7317 and they are a good filter.
they use a 2ply media that can trap more then double the amount
of dirt then the standard fram.they are more costly, selling for about $7.00 at walmart.still cheaper then the oem filter.the real
key is to change oil and filter frequently.to me that means every
2000 miles if you run dino or 3000 with synthetic which is what i
use.
