shorter oil filter??? kinda long

So I decided to change my oil yesterday. Went to Wally world to get the stuff and remembered that I also intended to buy the end cap type filter wrench since I forgot last year and had to use a screwdriver.
Happily they had the Rotella T6 gallon jug, $20, but they were out of the st7317 filter that used last year. Crap! So I started looking through the books they have, cause the little computer doesn't do bikes, and wasn't finding any. Then I spot a one page laminated thing from fram that lists only bikes and atvs. So I find the filter number and search the shelves and finally find the filter. CRAP again! It is 3 times as expensive as the walmart filter. THe St wally filter is $2.84 and the Fram was over $7.

I was pissed. Well it was the only one they had so I bought it, the oil, and the cap wrench. Got home, drained oil, cleaned the screen. Went to remove the filter and, What? The cap wrench wouldn't fit between the filter and the goat bladder. Crap again! Get out the screwdriver and make a terrible mess.

Well I get it off, clean it up and install the fram filter. It is shorter. Short enough in fact to fit the wrench on it next oil change. I found this rather interesting. I was pissed at the difference in cost but really when it comes to the aggravation of trying to remove the wally filter, I will pay the extra. Can't wait to get it out and put some miles on. THis is my first full synth oil change with my nomad. In the short ride I took it does seem to shift smoother. But that may just be in my head.

You shouldn't need a wrench to remove or install a properly installed oil filter. Assuming you installed the previous filter, and didn't use a wrench to (over)tighten it. Spin the filter on until the gasket makes contact with the machined surface and then give it about a half turn. That's all it needs.

As I've said many times, you'd be surprised how "untight" you can put a filter on and it not leak. That's all the tighter it needs to be. It will tighten up with heat and time anyway to the point that if you used the "gorilla" tightening method your going to be cutting that filter off later!

I only use my fingers to tighted it, never the palm of my hand. It turns out to be about 1/2 turn from when the gasket hits...

I never use a wrench to tighten. Learned that the hard way. Just couldn't seem to get a good enough grip on it. I got the filter off last year by hand after only a small struggle but I just couldn't get a hold of it this year. Felt pretty wimpy to be honest.

The ST7317 isn't the stock replacement. But it works and you get a little more filter element.

They started farming out the manufacturing of them to an Eastern European country. The quality isn't what it used to be.

Check Gadgets page and choose another quality filter.

I've been running the Purolator lately.

That's funny...I have 4 ST-7317's on the shelf in my garage. They all have "Product of USA" stamped on them. I just went and checked.

You have some of the last made in USA. They haven't been made here for a while. The Big Box store needed to make a few more pennies.

The Bosch 3300 is just what the doctor ordered. They can be found at Auto Zone at least they are here in local Auto Zone. Less than $7.00 also. It is the same size as the Kawasaki filter. You have no problem getting it on and off.
