Fun Meter!

I was having a conversation with a guy a few days ago and the amount of miles I put on the bike came up. I was saying how I try to ride at least 10,000 miles every season, and he was asking why a set number goal was important to me. Citing reasons such as decreased resale value, increased maintenance, etc. as downsides. I kind of moved on to a different topic and never really answered his question fully for whatever reason. Later on I started thinking about it more and more, why is miles on the bike so important to me :-/ As long as I get to ride, that's what's important right? Well, I went out for a ride to do some thinking
After a few miles I had an answer. To me the odometer is a Fun Meter! I can look at it and think back to each and every mile ridden and all the good times associated with them. Some guys have a certain number of weekends they want to go fishing. I have a certain amount of fun (miles) I want to have each year! May seem kinda silly, but I just thought it was an interesting enough thought to share with ya'll :)

Fun Meter!

I like that.

Me too, I didn't buy the bike for it's resale value, because I don't intend to sell it.

Fun Meter!

I plan on riding the wheels off my bike, I don't care how many miles I rake up on the bike or if it has any resale value. If after a few years it starts giving me problems I'll replace it. I have a neighbour who has a Vette and a Road King and he barely ever takes them out. His way of enjoying them is knowing that they sit in the garage in like new condition with very low miles.
Its guys like him that provide guys like me with my next ride.

Fun Meter!

I remember on my first Nomad figuring out about how many hours I rode it in 63,000 miles. Sometimes I rode slow in canyons, and sometimes fast on Highways, so I figured perhaps 50mph average.

That comes out to about 1,200 hours of fun just on that Nomad.

Guys who go hiking or fishing seem to have a lot of hours of fun, but most people driving somewhere and the drive there and back isn't part of the fun. Slogging 12 hours down the freeway to L.A., then 12 hours back in a car doesn't equal 24 hours of fun like it does on a Nomad. Every hour on the nomad is fun, getting there, and getting back.

The odometer on a Nomad is a fun meter like Metal says. The bigger the number, the more hours of fun that has been accomplished. I'd rather wear the fun meter out, than save it up for the next guy on resale.

Clears head and brings out the philosopher in us..................... :) :) :)

When I'm on the Nomad it's more like

My wife Pat says the Nad is getting buried with me. (Better be a big hole)

Fun Meter!

Geez I guess "Fun Meter" would or could be a gage of pleasure attributed to the speedo. But mileage doesn't always tell the tale as 10,000 mi of mostly highway mi would not be very pleasurable to me. On the other hand 5,000 mi of country roads would mean a lot more saddle time and more exposure to the local culture that is missed when on the highways & main roads. :-/

Yep,for me the Quality of the ride far exceeds the mi ridden!

Maybe you should set your goal a little higher to account for the 5-10% innaccuracy in the ododmeter? ;)

I know I know...the speedo is the problem.

Fun Meter!

Put 170 miles on the fun meter yesterday. Wife and I spent almost five hours on mostly two lane country roads.

Well ya ole dawg I have to agree with ya. Quality is the most important thing with quantity being second. I don't travel highway unless I'm trying to make time to get somewhere. On my trip last yr the only time I took the highway was to skip certain areas to get to better ones.
