1500 Post-Winter Sleep Stalling
My 1999 1500 is stalling as soon as I let the clutch out - it doesn't seem to grab and start to move, but just dies even if I give it lots of throttle.
This is after firing it up from a winter's sleep. Runs fine, giving it gas in neutral is normal - but letting the clutch out is stalling it. It was running great when I put it away last fall, so I'm at a loss as to what's changed. Any ideas? Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Thanks, Ells. Easiest fix ever. Color me stupid...
I hadn't tried running it with the kickstand down before. Sure works better with it up! Now, if the snow would just melt a bit more... |

![]() The real-funny stories are when someone's bike doesn't start... so they begin taking all kinds of things apart thinking there is something major wrong with... only to find out much later and with much embarrassment that they simply had the kill-switch on!! ![]() ![]() ![]() I, personally, have never done either one of these things those... not ever... I promise ::) ::) ![]()

Burly, If it makes you feel better - Couple weeks ago after pushing the bike out of the garage for the first ride in about 6 weeks (long stretch for me) I check a few things over including oil. Since my driveway is on a bit of hill, it started roll when checking the oil so put it in gear and went about my business. Ready to go, jumped on, key on, kill switch set, clutch in - nothing except a faint click. Dead battery! Never happened before but battery is getting a little old. Should I jump it, or charge it? Then again, I'm on a hill and there must be some life left in the battery and even though I've heard these bikes can't be push started, I decided to let it roll down the driveway and find out for myself. Got on, started rolling, went to drop it into gear, already there, hit the started and it started right up! Starter will not engage if in gear and kickstand down. Duh! Tend to forget some all that stuff while hibernating.

I have put the kickstand down and it sure kills the engine. I don't recall trying to start off with it down.

I had never tried to drive off with it down before either - I was in the garage just seeing if everything was working OK waiting for the snow to subside.
Which it did - got out yesterday and today, which is amazing for Saskatchewan. Thanks again Ells! |
