That depends. I almost never run regular because even with the pipes, intake and processor, it still pings some. I can get away with 87-89 octane in the cooler months, but for about 6-7 months of the year, I still need premium.
Some of these bikes are more susceptible to pinging than others.

Dobeck TFI, Roadhouse exhaust and opened the intake using a spectro 9 in. air filter. Coasters. Been using regular and in all conditions have not had the engine ping.

Have the TFI, Thunder stealth intake, and VH baggers. Even gets a little warm here in Houston, and I use regular (87) all the time. Just have to tune the 3rd pot a little for additional fuel above rpm or with load.

Must be only the 1500s will run on 87. I have V&H, Chuckster's Dual plate and TFI and no pinging on 87.

TFI, V&H with UB's, Chuckster dual plate. Run 87 year round with no pinging. Well, I guess it's not pinging....maybe I can't hear it anymore. :)

I have the Cobra FI200R and have debaffled pipes. I have been running regular the last couple of tanks. No problem yet but when it gets hot I may have to move up to 89 octane. Will check and see how it sounds once it gets hot.

Charlie, I live in the warmer climes and you can tune it to run regular. Only problem is you'll end up with 33 mpg's on the highway and 29 around town. After a while I figured out the tuning it leaner I had to run premium but got 41 mpg's on the highway so the cost was a wash.
Instead of the low fuel light coming on at 135 miles I can stretch it to 170 miles. I prefer the longer range over the satisfaction of running regular...

Regular Gas
here's a little tip about pinging on regular gas. in the old days when high performance cars were around we ran 10.5 to 1 compression from the factory and had to use premium leaded gas over 100 octane. the engines would still ping if you did'nt use your head when you drove it. you could not lug them or they would ping. if you have a fuel processor on your nomad and it is set right and you are still having problems with pinging, you are overloading the engine. shift down a gear. it's your fault the engine is pinging. with the compression ratio the nomad has, it won't ping unless you are lugging it. any engine will ping if you over load it excessively at low rpm, no matter what octane fuel you run. i run regular in my nomad with the cobra 2000r, pro charger, and cobra true duals, with no ping no matter what the ambient temp. is. i'm sure if i overloaded the engine at low rpm i could get it to ping. thats what gears are for. just do a little thinking while you ride. it will become habit and there will be no ping. in other words don't be afraid to downshift. there is no reason for the nomad to ping once you get the mixture to the right ratio with the fuel proccessor unless you are abusing the throttle to rpm ratio. Regular Gas
I had V&H pipes and a Dolebek TFI for all of last year - still pinged on anything less than premium, especially in the summer. Installed Chuckster's dual-plate intake mod and the ping is gone, even on 87. We'll see about the summer months.
Cactusjack is spot-on. Some bikes are more susceptible to ping than others, and it also depends on riding style. Don't lug the Nomad like an HD - these things like to be rev'd.
