engine miss/back popping
I debaffled my exhaust about 2 weeks ago and up until now, no problems have been experienced. Today, I went for a ride and fired her up. It sounds like the engine is missing at idle. Took her for a spin and it sounds fine when maintaining speed or decelerating; however, under load of accelerating, it sounds like the engine is missing. I also noted that when shifting, the exhaust seems to be popping, possibly due to back pressure.
I don't have a lot of experience of mc engine works (never had many issues either) but it seems similar to sounding like an exhaust leak on a car. I'm taking it into the stealer tomorrow, as its still covered under xtend. warranty but I was wondering if anyone else has had same experience or ideas on cause. Info: 2007 1600, debaffled exhaust but no other air/exhaust mods. Been running 91 oct since I bout it (3000 mi ago) and it now has 19000. thanks for the help. Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Let us know what the dealer says. I curious how they react to the debaffle work.

Install new plugs. That's about the easiest and cheapest thing to try and it may tell you quickly if thats the problem. If they get fouled out it will make it run terrible. Why it could be fould may be a different problem.

Well, now that it has cooled down a little, I looked around a bit. I did see the exhaust pipe has cracked; the pipe from the 2nd head and runs to the top of the intake for the goat bladder. I don't know if there are any other issues at this time or what would cause the pipe to crack. Guess I'll find out soon enough.

Good luck I hope they do not blow a gasket and try to blame the debaffling.
I did mine not very long ago (more then a month now) and I get that occasional "pop" if I come off of the throttle hard but so far no missing. If the exhaust is cracked then thats obviously the issue you are having... Depending on your dealer you might have to give them the ole Clint Eastwood look and say..."Comon Make My Day" attitude with them. I hope it all turns out ok for ya

The cracked exhaust is more than likely the problem. But, I will tell you what a rep from Ma Kaw told me on the phone before I debaffled. He said that if there is a problem that could be linked to the de-baffle, I would have to go back to stock before they would pay anything to troubleshoot. That is only if the de-baffle could possibly be the culprit. In other words, if you develop an oil leak, the debaffle wouldn't be an issue. But if the engine is backfiring, missing, or has lost power, it would have to be returned to stock before it would fall on their dime. That's his words, not mine. I would still assume that it is your leaking exhaust though.

There are quite a few folks that have stock exhaust systems sitting around. If they won't do anything about the cracked pipe I would just buy another set and throw em on. I know a fellow here in Jax that has a set from a 098 and has since traded the 08 for a V-star Stratoliner so has no use for them don't know what he'd part with them for but can't be to much!
By the way, this is the first time I have heard of a stock exhaust header cracking. !!! ???

Just below the weld, the pipe seems to be cracked. I don't wanna get to indepth right now as she'll be seeing the DR in the a.m. Once I talk to the tech, hopefully I'll get more pics and see what would cause the issue.
I've included a link for some pics; a little blurry due to the camera and tight spots/unable to get around the pipe more. http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/f...haustcrack.jpg http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/f...austcrack1.jpg http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/f...austcrack2.jpg |

I would have never guess that of stock pipes. I thought you might have had V & H and did state that. We have had 2 sets of V & H that cracked about 2 inches below the header flange on the rear jug.

Well, the dealer said it appears to be cracked at the weld...he called Kawi and explained what I had, to include the mod of the debaffled exhaust. Kawi stated that they would cover the header pipe as they don't see the cause of the crack being attributed to the mod. So, parts are on order and hopefully be in by next week.

That is good to hear, but if you do need a stock system pm me. Put on set of V & H last fall on my 08 willing to sell the stock setup.

Appreciate the offer for the stock exhaust; I've actually thought about picking up a used one a little bit down the road, just to have on hand "just in case".

Hi,
Did you do the debaffle with the mufflers on the bike or did you take them off ? Were you hammering on the baffles to get them out ? If you had a defective header pipe to start with this could have been the last straw ? |
