06 Nomad difficult to Start
I've replaced my battery on the Nad but its still having a difficult time cranking over. I'm wondering if the starter is going out or if anyone has had this similar issue. 23K miles and never had any problems. Any help is greatly appreciated. I do have the GTTP warranty but just don't have any reputable dealers.

My last 'O6 Nomad had a bad starter. It went bad at 15K miles. Make sure your cables are tight. I bought a rebuilt starter out of California for about $250.00. Kaw wants about 500.00 for a new one.
Are you going to replace the starter yourself instead of letting the shop do it?

I believe the GTTP warranty would cover the starter but not certain. If its covered, I will let a dealer do the job. Unfortunately, I think its the starter as well.

I had a starter go bad in my 99 that was replaced under warranty.
I thought it was the battery, because it was almost 4 years old. It wold turn over really slow, then do the click click click. I'd put a charger on it to give it a boost, then it would turn over a little faster, just enough to fire. Sounded like a 4 year old battery needed replaced to me. I got a new battery, and had the same problem. I thought that maybe I got a bum battery, and went and had it tested (should have done it with the 4 year old battery). It tested fine. I took it to the dealer and they determined that it needed a new starter. They replaced it under warranty. |

I think you're right Dan. You described a very similar problem that my bike is having. BTW, I've seen your video before riding patterns and those are very similar to the ones we ride at work. Where are those patterns from? Very smooth, especially with the Nad. Did you have to open up the patterns to get the Nad through those patterns?

Will do! Probably have a response near the end of the week. Weather and work will prevent me from getting to the dealer until then. Thanks for the help!

Easy test is to buy a inductive 600 AMP tester, and hold it on the starter cable. This is an inexpensive tool. Have someone you trust start the engine. If the amps reading is around 300 to maybe 375 AMPS it probably isn't the starter. If the amps reach more than that, like 600 amps maybe then it is the starter.
I am a greaser I guess as i fix my bad starters unless they come dirt cheap. Cleaning up the bendix and the solenoids isn't that hard, checking out the armature is too bad, untill you find it is dead shorted. Could be just short or cruddy brushes, that can be cross referanced and might cost a buck each, in a auto parts store.

Just following up with details about my incident. It was in fact the starter. It was pulling 300 amps on start up and very slow. Food for thought, it did not go out all together but it was extremely slow kicking over and it was not a battery issue. I am pretty good about putting a battery tender when I'm not riding my bike. So, seems like the GTTP warranty has already paid for itself. Very nice.

Looks like Todd is confused. Sounds like namelama found a dealer to replace the starter on warranty, I think, even though it was only drawing 300 amps, but fixed the problem anyway.
