Drifter fender on Nomad
Drifter has only one brake disc on left side - Nomad has one on either side. Fender has a cut out / buldge on left side and cover to accomodate the brake caliper! 800 Drifter is same. It has been done before.

Drifter fender on Nomad
I know what you are saying, because I just did it on this bike.
Not an easy job, but can be done. I used a Classic lower fork tube on the right side, Drifter wheel and caliper with Nomad rotor on the left side. I had to get creative with some caliper and axle spacers, because the Nomad forks are 1" wider than the Drifter, but I Got er Done . |

Drifter fender on Nomad
You know, I like the looks of it. Nice job. ;)
I always liked the looks of the Indian Chief from the era of the 40's... particularly the '47 Chief... the most classic looking bike ever built in my opinion. One of the reasons I love the looks of the "pre-2009" Nomad is that it seems to have a "retro-look", while at the same time you can't seem to pin it down to any one particular copy of a bike. A Nomad IS a Nomad -- period. However... adding the Drifter/Indian fender does fine with the look of the bike.

I really like the look of the fender, how does it stop with only one disc up front now compared to the way it was originally.

I think it looks great! Too bad someone doesn't make a kit to convert a stock nomad fender to that look (while retaining the dual rotors). Nice Work!

Drifter fender on Nomad
I seriously considered doing this when I moded my bike this winter.
If you want to keep your front stock, you'll not only have to cutout a place for the break caliper, but also change the mold of the side of the fender to allow a space for the rotor. Definitely not an easy job and if you don't have the right equipment, it wont look right. The cost of having it done correctly along with the cost of the fender is what discouraged me from going through with it. Jo-Bear, a member on this forum, is also a good person to chat with. I spoke with him about this process and he is very knowledgeable about modifying the nomad to make this type of thing work. Good luck! and if you do it, you better post pics!!! :)

The breaking action is just as good as before. I used the Drifter caliper on the left side that has larger pistons than the stock Nomad caliper for better stopping power. I ended up just replacing the front wheel because my bike sits low enough in the rear that you dont see the rear wheel anyway. My original intent was to use the Nomad wheel { I even made a fiberglass caliper cover for the right side } but didnt think I would get the look I wanted with the aluminum wheel.
There are a couple of ways to get this job done, but here are the parts that I used: Classic lower fork tube on rt side Drifter wheel, caliper Nomad rotor and axle Modify Drifter fender mounting hole spacing Fabbed brackets and braces for lower fender support The Drifter lower fork tubes would be the way to go{ cost } All parts were used E-Bay purchases except fender {new} This got pricey even with used parts, but I really like how it came out. Besides....I cant leave anything alone{ insert Tim Allen grunt } I am going to sell off all the spare parts if anyone is interested. Wheel and tire, fender, calipers ,rotors, front fender rail, stock light bar, and a nice set of chrome rotor and caliper covers. |
