Cold Weather...Baaaaaaaad!!!

I don't know how our northern brothers and sisters do it! I made it home with my new baby after a 363 mile trip in anything from 25 degrees in Houston when I started and 47 degrees in Del Rio when I finally made it home. I thought that I was prepared!! I had on Under Armor extreme cold weather long johns, heavy jeans, long wool socks, thinsulate 10" boots and leather chaps on the bottom with the Under Armor thermal top, a long sleeved t-shirt, flannel shirt, Under Armor dickie and leather police jacket with heavy liner on top. I even found a pair of long forgotten snowmobile mittens in my stored gear and wore them. Even with frequent stops for coffee (and even more frequent stops to get rid of the coffee ) I still froze my tuccus off!!! I understand that 20 degrees may be considered balmy conditions to some of you out there, but I don't like it at all. Luckily we may only see ten days below 30 all year, but why did they have to come when I had already made arrangements to go to Houston and ride my new bike home? I had non-refundable air tickets so I couldn't change my dates and hand to tough it out. Other than freezing the Nomad made the trips with no problems at all. I had a lot of folks tell me they loved the bike, but I was completely off my rocker to ride in this weather.

I don't know anybody who considers 25 degrees balmy for riding.
It is -9 here right now and I still wouldn't consider 25 balmy. :)

Cold Weather...Baaaaaaaad!!!

Our season is short, so we ride when we can..what that means is, as long as there is no snow or ice..off we go. The coldest I've ridden in is -10. Not too pleasant when your fingers and toes go white and stay that way for a while once your in a warm place..but riding is riding eh...Bdog

Welcome to the Nomad Nation. Engine guard chaps, Tourmaster Polartex gloves with silk liners, fleece scarf and a full face helmet will get you fixed up for your Texas winter riding when you have to bite the bullet. Maybe even some deflectors for the hand grips. Gadgets New Vulcan Owners Guide is a must read. Enjoy. PS Check out Texas VROC. Ride to Goliad.

Engine guard chaps make a world of difference. You HAVE to get a set.

I've got the first set of hand air deflectors that Chuckster' made, they are PRICELESS. Get up with him and get a set of those and the large lowers. You won't believe the difference.

Chemical handwarmers...I get them at BJ's for $20.00 per box. I slip one in the back of each glove and have no problem. Anything above 45 F and I don't need gloves with the deflectors.

I can ride comfortably into the low 20's now. When I first moved up from FL the winter killed me. But slowly the right equipment came together. It's going to be right at the freezing mark today and we're riding down to 97 Kickstand for lunch and a cold one. About 150 mile round trip.

Enjoy the Nomad. I personaly think the Pearl Black 2003 is the best looking one. And in a couple months it'll be 90 F anyway.

Thanks for the replies...Ordered a set of engine guard chaps today. I also dug through some more boxes of stuff that have been packed away in the attic and found a couple of balaclavas from when I worked on the flightline many years ago. One is neoprene with a fleece lining and I am going to try it when I ride to work in the morning. With that, my full face helmet and a new set of polartec gloves I picked up at the local Honda dealer I should be good. I may complain, but I am still going to be riding if at all possible. See you all down the road somewhere

Cold Weather...Baaaaaaaad!!!

I had kinda the same experience when I bought my Nomad a couple years ago. I live in North Idaho and purchased the Nomad in Seattle,WA (350 miles) approx. end of March. Well there is a rather large mountain pass (Cascade Mountains) and some record snow levels. As I cruised East up towards the summit (auto drivers must have thought that this guy was nuts), I found out that the "West- bound" lanes were closed due to avalanche clearing. Well, luckily the pass was just wet (you know that Seattle rain), but it was really the flat lands across Washington state that was the coldest part.... Yes-mad
