Windows 7
I have decided to buy myself a new laptop. Does anyone have any experience yet with Windows 7? Most laptop makers give me a choice of Windows 7 home premium or professional, and 32 or 64 bit. I'm not sure which way to go.
I work in IT, but I deal with Unix systems all day, not overly knowledgeable when it comes to Windows systems. Thanks!

Scott, we're actually using Windows 7 on our Intel Macs (Snow Leopard) and have found the 64 bit version to be stable. We are using Boot Camp and Parallels for dual boot or dual operation of both systems, depending on the hardware and specific application. It's working great for talking to Digital audio consoles and other assorted digital signal processing devices we use. The only "gotcha" to be aware of, is running 64 bit, you "may" not be able to find drivers for your peripherals. It just depends on the manufacturer of you printer, scanner, whatever device.

Scott, if it is already installed you probably won't have any more problems than usual with a Windows system. I understand there can be some serious failure issues with the folks trying to do an upgrade on their older computers. If you have a choice go with the professional version. Microsoft has a tendency to cripple the lower tier stuff.
On the other hand, you could just blow out the Windows load and put Linux on it. That is what I did with my laptop and I haven't had any problems. ![]()
