Windshield reflections

At certain times of the day, I get a very strong reflection of the sun off my speedometer glass right on my windshield where I'm trying to look through.

Do any of yall have this issue, and if so, what can/have you done that can help correct it?

My windshield is just a bit too high to look over, and I have limited angles I can tilt my fairing/windshield.

Does the speedometer cowl visor work, or would I be getting reflections off it's chrome?

Windshield reflections

I met a guy a couple weeks ago that has one on his 1600 classic. He bought his because of the reflection of the speedo on the shield at night and he says that he doesn't see it at all with the visor. I have thought about it but $80 is a bit high for me.

I get it too, but my big problem is at certain times of the day, I look at the speedo and the glare off the glass makes the gauge disappear.

Windshield reflections

Mac, As you touched on, it's ideal to look over the windshield. I'm 6'1" and still couldn't find a setting that allowed me to do so. I ended up cutting a full 2" off the crown of my windshield.

Don't be scared. With some masking tape, a variable-speed jig-saw, and a little patience, it's a very simple task. I like the overall shape of my shield better now too.

Windshield reflections

looking at your sig pics i would say that your problem is caused
by the angle your windshield comes off the fairing.the windshield
also looks a bit tall so i would cut her down a bit and agree that
it really is very easy to cut a windshield down.nothing worse then
looking thru a windshield at night when it is raining, much better
to look over it.

I had the same problem and a cowl took care of the problem for me. Looks really nice on the bike too. More bling with a practical purpose. Really made a huge difference at night for reflection as well.

At 5' 11" and the W/S at the lowest setting and maximum tilt back I am easily always looking over it, with no issues with buffeting that I can recognize, 1/2 dome or full-face. Only time I see the speedo reflection is when I look down.

I usually don't have any problems with reflections. There are times I need to look over the windshield and I sit a little taller in the seat when I need to look over it. I am only 5' 8" but can sit comfortably and see over the windshield when I need or want to. My windshield is stock and for me is just about the right height.

same here and actually sitting up nice and tall and straight keeps me from getting backaches as much as when get lazy and slouch. I just slouch when it's raining...oh but I'm not 5'8"...5'61/2" ...windshield in lowest postion.

Windshield reflections

Guys.......people pay a lot of money in their fancy cars & fighter jets for "heads-up-display" (HUD) to project vital stats onto the windscreen, ......and here you are talking about how to get rid of this. lol

As has been mentioned several times throughout this post, the key thing here I think to not having these reflections in your direct line of sight is that for a properly set windshield, you SHOULD be setup to look across the top of the windshield by a inch or two, not directly through it. I personally haven't experienced any reflection at all, but my Nomad is an 02 and the angle of the instrument cluster has the speedo tilted away from the windshield pretty good.

After looking at your signature pic I noticed that your added fairing tends to lay the windshield down across the gage at a lot more of an angle than a traditional windshield, which normally follows the rake of the forks, therefore this extra angle no doubt is a big contributing factor & source of your frequent reflection problem, and may be a hard thing to avoid in your particular case; although the chrome speedo shade may help block a portion of it in your case, and will look good at the same time.

If you just can't seem to get rid of it, then it might be better to start looking at this as a "Special Feature" :-/ and bragging that YOUR Nomad has a highly sought after HUD system.

I need to check again, but I don't think I can set the windshield up any straighter (then it *would* be impossible to look over). If I take off the storage compartment under the radio I believe I can tilt it back towards me a little more - possibly moving the reflection off and allowing me to just see over the top, but might make the reflection problem worse.

The previous owner installed the fairing and added a little bit taller windshield. When I was caught in the heavy rain a few weeks ago I got to where I couldn't see through it - tried looking over (then I couldn't see the road) or was looking around the side (not good). Either way, it did make me realize I DO need to be able to look just over it more easily.

If I do/can stand the windshield up more, I would need to cut down the hight some. It would be a lot cheeper than buying the expensive cowl visor, but what ever works....

Thanks for your input and opinions. I plan on doing a lot of things this weekend to the bike and dealing with the windshield was one of them.

Another consideration would be to purchase a shorter smoked charcol style winshield for your fairing. Would look good and solve the glare problem and you can still see through it as needed.

Check ebay for a 1500 cowl visor. It is a little tight but it will work. I kept mine off of my 1500 classic and now have it on my second 1600 Nomad. I installed it with Goop and it will come off with a little effort when you trade bikes. Don't be afraid to cut the windshield. As stated just tape it up good make the tape and cut the line. Sand the cut edge with 400 grit sand paper with the tape still in place to protect the shield and you are good to go.
