Rear Muffler Heat Shield

for a long time before installing an aftermarket system, I had a piece of fence wire under there that I would twist with a pair of pliers to tighten when I needed. It sounds ridiculous to fix it with fence wire, but it worked, and wasn't visible at all.

Derry, I had the same problem. The hose clamp had worked its way off of the little hook on the back of the shield. It's happened twice. The last time it happened, I slid the clamp back over the hook and used a 1/4" drive ratchet to tighten it up rather than a nut driver. No problem since.

Derry, sometimes the hose clamps sanp, can buy a new one anywhere and redo it. Sometimes just loose. There is always a fix.

I had a similar problem with the front (right side) muffler. I noticed it when I was reassembling the exhaust system after servicing the swingarm. The heat shield is flared out and there are 2 flat tabs on the inside with a rubber tip that slides into 2 mounts on the inside lip of the muffler assembly. One of those rubber tips or caps was missing. So I took a piece of vacuum hose and cut off maybe 1/4" and slipped it onto the tab, then slid the tab into the mount. Problem solved.

undo the clamps and the heat shield comes off. the only easy way is take off the whole pipes, thats too much trouble.

Derry, I'm going from memory and I have after market pipes now. My rear heat shield was rattling. I believe you loose the hose clamp and slide it forward. Once you have the shield off there are two tabs at the rear of the shield. Bend them a little. That should take care of it. There is a rear shield on both sides and the same should apply to both.

hmmm...i think i may have miss named the "shield". the piece i have rattleing is on the rear exhaust pipe, vertical, looks like it is sitting on what ya'll are referring to as the heat shield...the piece i am referring to is about an inch wide by 8-9 inches long and appears to be sitting over/attached to the heat shield with rivets? hard to see under there....anyhow...thats the piece i'm referring too...the collars/bands underneath are all tight....???

Derry, I will have to go out tomorrow and look at my pipes and see if I can figure out what you need. Sorry any answer I could give tonight would be a guess.
