Starter problems seems to be rare, your the first Ive heard of with one. Are you sure that your battery is really good, sometimes loose connections play havoc with the starter.

The start motor runs, but the engine won't turn?

The battery was my first consideration. It is less than 3 months old. I cleaned and tightened the connections after the first problem. No the starter does not engage. I really sounds like a battery or connection problem the way it clicks. If and when I find out the problem I'll post.

One rider had a loose connection where the ground wire attaches to the frame. On mine I bought a new battery refusing to believe it was the starter and it turned out to be the starter.

So what is the click? One press of the button and one click?

Or one press of the button and zillion clicks till you let go?

Brian's Nomad developed the same thing a couple of months ago, just wouldn't start no mater what he did. He tried and tried the started button and finally she would go when he pulled in the clutch (and no, the kill switch was not off and yes it was in neutral). He took a can of WD40, sprayed the clutch switch, cleaned it up, pulled the clutch a few times, and hasn't had the problem again.

On this one I just today discovered my bike won't start with the side stand down in gear, clutch pulled in.. it should, but it should quit if I let the clutch out.

Me thinks the side stand switch is the culprit.

What n9151's problem is I don't know yet..... Would that be code for 1951? That was a purty good year if you ask me

According to the chart in the 1600 service manual if the side stand is down and the transmission is in gear the engine will not start regardless of whether the clutch is pulled in or released. Likewise if the engine is running and it's in gear, if the sidestand is put down the engine will stop, again regardless of the position of the clutch.

See the last two items in the chart.

Really? I swear it did... I think my 1500 did too, but I can't go test that idea.

Must be I am confused which is pretty normal fer me

I park in gear, shift to neutral, hold the clutch in and fire the bike usually. This lets the lurch of cold oil leave me settin purty, no lurch.

Maybe a few times I shifted to 1st and began to let the clutch out, which kills the engine with the side stand down.

The night I hit the jeep came to question, since that night I had a bad time getting the engine to start after hitting the jeep, but admittedly my thinking was screwed...

I think I would prefer the side stand down, in gear, clutch pulled IN, that the engine would start.. I wonder if I can create that combination..

Other than my 01 Nomad no bikes I ever had had these safetys. I like them, but would like to make the bike start any time I have the clutched pulled in whether or not I was in gear..

hmmmm and Thanks Bob..

yeah I figured I could 'jump the side stand' but I want it to kill the engine if the clutch lever gets let go of, and the side stand is down.

All this makes perfect sence when it ain't friggin 90+ degrees i bet..
