VN1600 Nomad Seat Possibilities???

I'm trying to figure out all the options for improved seating with my '06 1600 Nomad.

I've seen some that are happy with the Mustang's and I've seen other not.

Just wanted to throw this out there, to see what everyone else thought and / or had installed?

Thanks in advance!!!

VN1600 Nomad Seat Possibilities???

You may want to take a look at the Day-Long seat made by Russel Cycle products. If you chose the leather option, and a backrest, etc., it can easily come to a thousand dollars. I've ridden the stock seat, a Mustang seat, and now have a Russel, and as far as I'm concerned anything other than a Russel is a waste of money. You'll be on a waiting list, and have to send them your original seat (they use the seat pan to create their new seat) or some other seat that they can use, but it'll be worth it.

If you send them an aftermarket seat for a Nomad, for example, they will not honor their warranty. You must send them the OEM seat for them to use.

There are far less expensive options, however, that may suit you very well, such as the Mustang, and the Corbin. Ultimate seats now makes a seat to vit the 1600 Nomad, and may be worth looking at also.

VN1600 Nomad Seat Possibilities???

Yeah, I'm sure my butt would enjoy me spending a bit on it.... my how much of my butt would be left for gratification once my better half found out that I spent that much.....

I went to J&P today and was talking to the guys about the saddlemen explorer.... I've seen a few places where they do make that one for my bike.... but "Parts Unlimited" does not list my bike as a possibility....

Does anyone have a Saddlemen and are you happy with it....

This is a little more in my price range?

Thanks in advance

Here is another option: http://greatdaytoride.com/Home_Page.php

I had him do mine, so far so good. I haven't done any really long rides yet but on 1-2 hrs (which was killer before) it's been a lot better and for $75.00 I figured it's worth a try before I drop $400 - $700 on other ideas.

VN1600 Nomad Seat Possibilities???

I hated the stock seat, it had to go. I wanted a Russels day long but it jwas just comming on to summer and there was no way I was going to part with my seat for a couple of weeks in the summer. So I ordered a corbin dual tour(ithink what its called). I was alot better but the family jewels were still getting numb. I bought a pro pad helped a little but still not happy. Went to bike week in Gettysburg Pa. and had a guy install a gel pad,in my stock seat. $180 later it was the best yet but still no as comfortable as I wanted. I ordered a Bakup backrest. know we are starting to see light at the end of the tunnel. I was on a day trip to the Flight 93 memorial and I stopped at little shop that had sheep skins. I thought I had it now, I road the rest of the way home it was conciderably more comfortable but but still had numb jewels. I rode this way for a alittle while but it still was not totaly happy. I went to a local apholstry shop and talked to the guy who ran it. Explained what was happening and I asked him about just making the riders seat level get rid of the bucket totaly I said like the old bikes were a long flat seat. He laughed and said Believe me you are not the first person who has said this and I have done quite a few through the years. I said great when do you want it. he told to just drop off the seat and it would be done in a couple of days. Cost $145 that included making a new cover for the seat. Well I know that it might be for everyone but I going to tell I am finally happy with my seat. Its like riding on a reclining chair. no sore butt lower back feels much better and the best part no numb nuts. I only wish I would have done this in the first place and saved a hundreds of dollars. But I love it now couldnt be happier, only down side is throwing your leg over the seat to get on the bike. But I will gladly deal with that for the comfort.

I didn't think Saddlemen made a seat for the 1600 Nomad. They didn't back when I was shopping for seats and I contacted them and they said they had no plans to make one for the 1600 Nomad. That was a couple of years ago, though.

VN1600 Nomad Seat Possibilities???

joesnomad, can you post a pic of the seat you had made?

starwolf, I bough a stock seat off a 2007 classic and put it on my nomad. Just got back from a 3,120 mile trip. Rode for 10 days. The stock classic seat is waaaayyyy more comfortable than the stock Nomad seat. I bought it on Ebay for $45.

Everybody has an opinion about seats, because everyone's "seat" is different. Some are comfortable for some, others are comfortable for others (Now isn't that profound and I'm sober)... Me, I love my Mustang and I'd probably love a "Day long" if I could afford one.

Reckon I'm in the minority as I think the stock seat is very comfy. Only thing I did is get one of Lonnie's backrests and I'm good to go! I did get sheepskins but haven't used them on a long trip yet. Can only be better.

Sometimes I wonder if the stock seat isn't good enough... however, to many people of really liked their aftermarket seats... I'm just trying to get a number of opinions so that I can better make my own....

I have a Piper modified seat, and while its better than the stock Nomad seat, its still not perfect for me on long days in the saddle.
But it will have to do for the time being.

Get yourself a spare seat (oe seats are pretty common) Take the cover off, use something for a cover that can be slipped on and off. Ride until you butt cant stand it and trim or pad the area that makes it comfortable. Keep this up for as long as it takes. Only you can determine where your pressure points are. Take it to an upolstery shop and tell (show) them what you want. Worked for me! Cost about $80 with a new cover.
