Nomad 1500 oil plug

I just discovered that my recently acquired Nomad is missing the original oil plug. In its place is one of those rubber plugs with a threaded bolt in the center that can be tightened down to expand the plug. Turns out the bolt is bent and a wingnut is what cinches it down. Looks like a jury rig thing. Anyone have experience on this setup? Just want to make sure it is a valid way to plug the drain hole. Hate to lose the thing on a ride. I must assume that the threads have been stripped. Will find out more on next oil change.

Had the plug strip out and repaired as follows:

I use the oil screen plug now and like it better.

Nomad 1500 oil plug

Hi, I had a plug like that in the block of a Safari van I owned. It let go and I lost all the coolant and left me stranded at the side of the road. I dont trust them.

I have never taken my oil drain plug out. I always use the side screen.

+1 on the oil screen plug. Once you repair the oil drain plug leave it. I just did my first oil change on the nomad using the oil screen plug and couldn't believe how easy it was.

Mine is a 1500. It stripped so I drilled it and put in a heli coil. Good as new now but I always use the side screen after all that trouble.

Ron, don't mean to step on your toes here but since your off line.....

The oil screen plug is behind the kickstand. It is a 17 mm plug and looks like a hex with a large flat washer under it. Behind the plug is an oil screen and large spring. This is an easier spot to remove the oil and check the condition of the screen for particles or foreign material. It is lower in the case and removes more old motor oil. It is torqued to 14.5 ft-lbs, 2 kg-m or 20 N-m.

Is it necessary to replace any gaskets or the screen when you drain the oil from the oil screen?

There's an o-ring side drain plug. You should inspect it and replace if needed.

Be careful not to break the oil screen plug - Brian snapped his off a month ago while putting it back on. It's made of cast and he didn't apply much pressure when it broke but we had to order a new one from Mama Kaw and wait .

When you guys are installing either of the the drain plugs, wipe them clean with a rag first, and also the threads in the crankcase as well. This will get rid of some of the dirt and grit on the threads and allow it to thread in smoother, also only use your fingers to thread it back in, you should be able to get it almost all the way in by hand. This will prevent cross threading the plugs. The wrench should only be used for the final snug. And just snug is good, don't overtighten, this is also why the threads can strip out.
