Ultimate V&H Baffles at Custer

For those of you who were in Custer (or Missoula...lol) this past week...most all of you probably had a chance to hear my bike. Many of you commented on the unique sound with the custom V&H baffles. I'm sure I only heard in person from those who liked them, but am equally sure they were too loud for others as well...(Landman comes to mind....haha).

In the interest of our membership...if you heard them for yourself...please let everyone know what you thought of them in your own way. Pipe sound is as personal as anything....so no feelings will be hurt if they aren't for you. I just think it would be helpful to the group to have some unbiased evaluations from those who heard them "up close and personal".... !

As a matter of fact, I'm wondering if a custom insert of that design might have a pronounced effect on the debaffled stock pipes. Who knows?

Kris,

I said Undecided because it was the only other choice for me. The bffles soiunded very nice, I like the tone and the nice burble. But, they seemed a little on the loud side to me. But, mine also seem a littel lounder than I want. Not that I'm going to change anything soon anyway.

I liked the sound Chris, but...your idle seems awfully low.

I told someone we should award you a prize for "the Nomad that sounds most like a Harley". Not that that's a bad thing.

CJ,
I have turned up the idle just a tad...even before your post here...but when I had the last service done...they set it at about 900....so.....maybe the the baffles changes the idle sound too. Anyways....glad you liked it...and btw....it was great to finally meet you! Wish we could have hung out a bit more and did a ride together. Oh well....there's always more rides... !

I have to admit, I love the Harley sound....so I like that part....just not so much the reliability part. On our return home I passed two Harley's that were being put on tow trucks....one of them was towing a trailer. Bike and trailer both were on the tow truck! That would ruin your day for sure....

Sounded okay to me, as long as you like them. But wouldn't want mine that loud though, need to keep the peace in the neighborhood.

Kris, although I didn't hear yours, I said "I loved Them". After all mine was the 1st set ever made , and I still love them (so does the wife). Yours is set up like DK's, and I love the tone of both of ours. Mine is idling at 925 RPM (after warm-up) and compared to the stock V & H baffles, it does sound like it's idling a lot lower than what the tachometer says.

I don't have a tach...so I just go by what they set it at when I get the service done. I should have known with the poll it would be split pretty much 50/50...lol. You either like louder pipes or you don't....there isn't much room in between...

Cliff's correct that these "baffles" do sound like the idle is set too low. according to my tach, its just a tad under 900 and has quite a lop!!
When I was getting gas the other day, guy on another pump was just getting back in his car. Heard the bike, sat there for few seconds until I shut it off, then he came over and asked "what cam manufacture is that."
PS: He had on a Harley T-shirt.

And Nets right....it is a "love 'em or hate 'em" sound. Too loud for some and not loud enough for others.

It really is surprising how quiet and mellow they are at highway speed compared to idle and low speed.

I wasn't at Custer but went to Laconia NH last week. I got great comments on the ultimate.

Actually, I got a group or U.S. Vets that were at the same motel an they all wanted to know what I had done. I got lost of excellent comments on the nomads from HD riders and others.

I just love them and they made a good showing at this 86th Laconia bike week.

I'm waiting for a pair to be made by my brother inlaw along with a trunk bracket. So it might be a couple weeks before I get the baffles :'( I'm undecided at this point.
About how loud are they compared to the stock baffles on the V&H Baggers? Does the drain cover quiet them down a bit?
Sorry if I'm thread jacking and thanks

The drain cover serves two purposes, it gives you back the torque you loose from switching the stock baffles out with the "Ultimates", and at highway speeds they become more mellower to the ears.
On the other hand, I like the sound with the pin instead of the drain cover, so to keep my torque, I installed a set of "torque cones" in my head pipes.

A buddy of mine has the stock VH pipes and on the freeway, his seems a lot louder. They truly to mellow a lot at faster speeds.

You ought to try. I bet you'd be surprised how they sound on the freeway.
