Fuel pump took a dump

So I'm getting ready to ride to work the other day. It's about 45 degrees, so I fire up the NAD and pull it out, let it idle for a few miniutes while I put on my leathers. About the time I'm preparing to to mount up and ride, I notice a rather large puddle forming under the bike. I bend down to take a look and sure enough there is a steady drip of...gasoline! Not wanting to look like the Ghostrider on the way in, I put her away and drive the cage.
Finally Saturday comes around so I pull the tank hoping it's a bad clamp or a hole in a hose. No sign of leakage, but since I have the aux tank I can fire her up with the main tank off and when I do I see that the fuel pump is leaking out of the main body. No big deal, I'll just buy another fuel pump, install it and be back on the road. Probably a 15 minute job including pulling and replacing the tank.
Here's where I get torqued off. After searching, that little squirt of a fuel pump is any where from $155.00 up up $180.00!!! :(" title="" border="0"/>
It's a miniature fuel pump for crying out loud, not an artificial heart!!! :(" title="" border="0"/>
Bugs me because it wasn't that long ago I put a fuel pump in one of my full size 4x4s and it cost me $39.00. WTH?

Now $150.00 clearly isn't going to bust my budget or bankrupt me, but man!!! I'm in the wrong line of work. I need to be selling parts.
Okay, rant off...anyone know of a more reasonable source for parts? At least someplace where maybe they'll buy me dinner or a drink before...well, you know.

Many thanks all.

Where exactly is it leaking? I am wondering if it could be fixed. A small hair line crack might be JB Welded, and last a long time.

Everything it seems is a hundred bucks these days... Almost a gimmie.. If once something was 25 bucks, today you can bet it is 125 bucks..

Haha. Laughing at your witticisms, not at your situation. $152.51 from Cheap Cycle Parts. $151.33 from Mrcycles.com, $182.15 from BikeBandit (now I know how they got their name). Sorry, looks like you aren't getting off easy on this one. Could be worse - you could be needing a new shock absorber.

And don't forget the cigarette and KY jelly. I think they are included with the part.

"Its not an artificial heart" Too funny audio...That's why forums are started. We need a way to beat the dealer's parts prices and we do a pretty good job sometimes. too bad the aftermarket can't cross that pump with one that's identical for 1/4 the price. I bet it's out there somewhere...

I hope that I'm not the only one that didn't know that the carb'd models used a fuel pump. I figured that they were gravity fed like a dirt bike.

I'm betting that I could just bypass it and it would run fine until I really got on it. But where's the fun in that?

Could you splice in a generic pump in the circuit ? You would have to know the fuel pressure setting and adjust the new pump accordingly.

There's a used one on ebay right now that a fellow member sent me a link for. If I can snag it I'll go with that. If not I'll go new. :-/

Good luck Audio....if it is any consolation your bike looks sweet.

I bet if you factor in $175 for the pump and add it to any other repairs over the years the Nad still is very cheap repair cost.

Just trying to make you feel better about it.

You been working out? You look like you have lost weight.

Hey Daryl, this sux. Part of the problem is that these are probably not a high use item so they get their money for stocking fees and such when one is needed. That's just me being cynical of course. Is there any chance that you sprung this leak due to high pressure from that extra tank that you have installed?

Thanks! Yes, my repair costs have always been minimal. I was just surprised at the price for such a simple item. For what it cost, it should dance!

Lost weight? Yeah, I'm about to lose $150 from my wallet!

Everyone I know calls me a cynic. What most call cynism, I call realism!
I don't think the aux tank is an issue. I have the fuel line for it teed in right in front of the fuel pump and also have a shut off valve so the pump only draws from one tank at a time. I turn the main petcock to off and use the aux tank until the bike starts to sputter, then turn the valve off for the aux tank and open the petcock so I have the guage and reserve available for the last tank. It's worked well for 3 years now.
No worries, I'll be back up and running soon enough.

I forgot this was a carbed bike...

What is fuel pump psi? Is it 3 to 8 pounds?

If you said.. I missed where the leak is from, exactly..
