Cam chain extenders

Can anyone explain to me exactly what these are? I have an 08 1600 and am wondering if it is just something that is done to improve performance or a maintaince thing. I have seen posts about the but am still confused as to what it/they are.

On the 1600 engine the cam chains seem to strech quicker than normal. The extenders are put on the end of your stock tensioner rods to take up the slack. You have two chouces. Extendrers or new chains. I had my extenders put in by the dealer at 45,000 miles and he said i still had a little ways to go.
It is definatly a maintence item.
If you are mechanicly inclined , which I am not , you can do it yourself.
Go to this link, scroll down to the bottom and there is a picture of the ones Chuckster sells. That's where I bought mine.

It is a maintenance thing. Go down on this site to where it says ENGINE and click on there and one member of our group has directions and pictures explaining and showing how to put them on if needed they did a good job! Also you can go to gadgets fix it page and under MAINTENANCE TIPS there is a section that shows how to install with pictures and better yet how you can check and see if you need them in about 15 min without having to reset them. If you decide you need them Chuckster (Joe ) sells them for 30 dollars.

Cam chain extenders

It is something that will have to be accomplished or your chain will end up with too much slack. Eventually will cause damage plus being noisy.

Cajunrider, I only have 12000 on mine. Which 5000 was put on it since I bough it used back in May. Thanks for all the tips. Is there a guess on the milage when this needs to be done and is there any directions for the tension rods or is this something that just wears out?

Mileage will vary. I would say between 25,000 to 40,000 miles is the norm for needing the extenders. The cam chain tensioner has a tip on it that wears. This tip is removed and a longer one put on. I have 60,000 kms on my 05 and I will be inspecting the cam chain tensioners in the Spring. I have had no issues with them yet that I am aware of.

I did mine at 25,000 and had a little travel left. I would inspect them after 20,000 miles. You should be good at 12,000.

Gadgets Fixit has an excellent how to that shows you in detail everything that is involved in installing cam chain extenders.
Actually doing the job is even easier than reading about it.

Steve that is good news. If installing them is easier than reading it I should do fine when it is time for me to do it.

Once youve done one side and figured it out, the second is usually a breeze.

It was alot easier than I thought it was going to be.
Took the bike to the dealer along with the extenders and just like that, the next day they were in.

I did Flavors bike at 32,000 miles I think. Jim will correct that if I am wrong. He has 3 teeth on the tenstioner on cly 1 and 2 teeth on cly 2 left to go. There is 19 teeth on the tenstioner, each 1/10th inch apart.

In part it depends on how agreesive a rider you are with that throttle. Someone who twists that wick hard ALL the time, will stretch the chains faster than a guy who is mostly more subltle.
