That should be just fine, I use whatever brand the store has in stock myself.
If you change it once or twice a season youll never get to wear it out.
Just be carefull not to overfil it.

I'm with you Mac while I'm changing the oil I pull the left saddlebag and change the rear oil also. You can have them both draining at the same time. Then put the filler caps back on and fill them up.

Be sure and don't fill the rear oil with the bike level. Use Mac's method of laying a 2 X 4 flat side down and put the side stand on it. That way when you put the rear oil in until it starts to flow back out you won't run the risk of over filling.

I use Mobil 1 full synthetic 75W-90 gear oil and it seems to do just fine. Pretty much any brand will work. I just prefer the Mobil 1.

I did the gear oil this morning. The service manual states to fill up to the grooves of the filler cap with the bike level. It's not possible to over-fill, as the oil will just run out.

If the bike is placed on a 2x4, the bike is less than level???

Weve found that if you fill the oil with the bike level you are actually overfilling it a little, and many times you will drown the seal, and it will start leaking from your driveshaft area.
By filling it on a 2x4 with the bike still leaning a bit you will not overfill it.

We wouldn't steer you wrong Dan. Some of the guys filled the way the book said and actually over filled. Later a leak started because of the pressure it created with too much in it. It actually expands when it heats up.

The manual isn't always right. If I were you, I'd put the side stand on a 2x4 and open the filler port and see what drains out.

Even filling on the sidestand on a 2x4, mine developed a leak in Custer last year. The seal, coupling, and o-ring were replaced under warranty by the dealer. They filled it with the bike level and I didn't change the gear oil until 7,500 miles later. It never leaked. They swear by filling it with the bike straight up. I continue to fill it on the sidestand on a flat 2x4 just cause you guys say so. ??? ;)

I change mine with every oil change and on a 2 X 4. Use 75-90 synthetic.
