Towing your bike

Just looking for some inexpensive recomendations on a sturdy enough trailer to use behind a car/van. And any "gottcha's" you think of. Thanks!

A good utility trailer can do the job quite well. As long as it has a minimum 1000 lb. capacity rating, and places to attach a few tiedown straps.

Towing your bike

I have only had to trailer my '01 once and only found one problem, that was the low ground clearance. We had to lift the back of the bike to get the frame to clear the arc of the ramp and trailer bed. A different trailer may not give that problem. My next trailer will have a dove tail though.
Thanks for your time

I had the same problem so I just parked the trailer so the back end was backed up to the slope of a driveway so the ramp was almost level. made it much easier.

I have the 5 X 10 Ultra trailer in this link. New about $1900 if you can find them used about $900. This is a good trailer but you do pay for it.

I've got a utility trailer that you see lawn service people use to transport their mowers..

Only "hitch" is that our bikes are so long that I have to turn the wheel in order to close the back gate. Rides right up and tows good. Trailer is from Northern Tool and I think I got it on sale for about $500, and is rated for 1300 lbs. I do use a 4X8 sheet of plywood over the mesh floor when hauling.

Works for me.... :)

Make sure you get a Harley bike cover. People expect to see them on a trailer.

There is a local U-Haul facility that stocks the motorcycle hauling trailer. It rents for $14.95/day. I thought about purchasing one but figured it was a waste of money for something I may use once or twice a year at the most. Tires dry rot and the alluminum will oxidize. I'm going to trailer mine up to Eureka Springs for our South Central Regional Rally. I have plenty of stuff to haul up for the cookout. This will also let me leave the morning before the rally begins and come home the day after it ends regardless of the weather. If I can ride over 630 miles each way going to and coming from Leakey TX, certainly I can drive it in my truck or the wife's Suburban.

You are right Cajunrider, sometimes it's better to rent. I use mine for hauling mulch and stuff so it doesn't sit long.

You could probably find the info for towing on any HD forum .

The only problem, the trailers will probably be an overrated Asian (I mean, American made)and greatly over priced

In a black and orange/white color combination. ;)

It depends on how far and how often you expect to tow your bike. Also, the size of the car / van you have. I think the best type trailer is an enclosed trailer for protection (security and weather). Used enclosed trailers are not very expensive and they are valuable for hauling lots of other things and can be used for storage. A 6 x 10 size will work if the door is tall enough for the windshield. I don't have a ramp door and use a homemade plywood / steel ramp that slides under the back of the trailer.

Towing your bike

I just picked up a nice 6x10 trailer with a spring assisted drop gate from a Gatormade trailer sales lot near me.
Then popped over to Harbor Freight for a 40 buck wheel chock.
Total cost with spare tire was $1130 plus Uncle Sams share....
:)
