What would (should) you do?

I copied this link from another forum. (Look at # 3)
Let's assume that you do all the right things on the bike and you are constantly aware of your environment.

What would you do if you are behind a truck or car and you see this red car approaching you at breakneck speed and you do not have enough time to safely move the bike? (What should you do?)

Dump the bike and jump on the car or truck in front of me. I don't know what I would do if the wife was on the bike.

This is not an attempt to be funny but that is where this rider ended up anyway. You might as well put yourself there and walk away rather than being thrown there and end up with some broken bones.

Kind of my point. I saw that he ended up there also. I don't think I would want to go to either side. Traffic might be coming or in the last instance she might try to swerve to the side and still get you. I would want to go somewhere with more iron around me.

This is so bizzare! I played this scenerio in my head riding home last night. I have been hit in that situation and would definetly dump and run or jump. I find myself watching behind me at lights and not relaxing until the cars behind me have stopped.

I make an effort to stop well behind vehicles stopped in front of me. That gives me some manuvering room to try to escape if necessary. I also always try to watch closely the traffic coming up behind me when I'm stopped at a light or in traffic. You have to watch more than the one directly behind you, if he stops but the one behind him doesn't you can still get clobbered.

For the situation in the photo, about all you could do is try to jump straight up just before impact.

I wonder if the rider saw it coming and launched himself into the back of the truck. To end up there with no serious injuries, I can't see how the impact put him over the bars without breaking his legs on them. I think in most cases like this, the rider would be lucky to see it coming, especially if the vehicle behind him was rear ended. I also think that in most cases if the rider was too close to the vehicle in front of him and saw the vehicle coming behind him at the last second, he or she would only have time to brace themselves or they would more likely freeze in their boots and get their plow cleaned.

This is a bad habit I have to work on. I know that I pull up too closely behind vehicles in front of me, especially in slow traffic. I will be more cautious from now on.

Yellow Jacket nailed it: Stop so as to allow yourself an escape route. That is an important part of paying attention while riding. Plan for escape, so to speak.

When stopping in traffic I index to the left or right of the vehicle ahead of me (whichever gives me the best escape route) with about 8'-10' of space between my bike and the vehicle ahead. I leave the bike in gear and watch the traffic approaching from the rear. If the car approaching from behind isn't slowing fast enough, I'm prepared to "shoot the gap". This has saved my bacon once so far.
