New Vaquero vibrations
My new 2016 Vaquero with 1375 miles shakes some and vibrates on acceleration. I checked the belt, it is tight as a drum. My 2007 Nomad with shaft drive was a smooth as silk on take off. ( I wish I had that bike back). The vibrations feel like a belt problem, It also makes a whirring sound on acceleration, like a pulley is loose, but i checked and it seems tight. Is this normal for the 1700's? My old 1600 Nomad would leave this bike in the dust. Any ideas about my shakes and whirring?

Tight as a drum is too tight.
Did you read the specs on the bike before you bought it? Kawasaki added additional vibe in the Vaquero compared to the Voyager through the clutch engagement design. Personally, I skipped the 1600 nomads because every one I test road had a lot of buzzy vibrations.

That belt is way too tight! you should be able to grab is midway between the pulleys and twist it 90 degrees easily in the morning. It does sound like the belt

Where to start. - The following are my opinions and observations after putting around 100,000 miles on 3) 1700 Voyagers. #1 - The belt should have some movement - They are way to tight from the factory. Loosen it up 1/2 turn on the adjusters both sides. see if it makes a difference. #2 - Nature of the beast - Low RPM acceleration on a stock 1700 causes them to groan. The 1700 likes 3000 RPM's - That's where it smooths out. #3 - The Smooth Solution - IVAN Re-Flash, Much discussed upgrade here and other forums. It's basically a re-tune of your stock ECU that in most eyes is the BEST $350 you will ever spend on your Vulcan 1700. It give additional power, additional MPG, Lower RPM smoothness (I can now run down to 1500 RPM and accelerate out with out the shakes) and to top it off - It runs cooler. http://www.ivansperformanceproducts.com/vn1700.htm The only real option on the Ivan Re-flash is he will need to know if you have the combination of After Market Pipes and Open Air Intake - That takes a different retune than 100% stock or Just Pipes. The best thing is you can call Ivan and he will talk you through it. Good Luck - Hope this helped. Mike |

the belts are set tight from the factory so they think that the owners are gonna stretch it in the next few thousand miles when in all reality, its gonna take about 15,000 or 18,000 for your bike to break itself in, have the belt stretch, newness wear off alittle.
The 1700's don't start being enjoyable till about 15,000-20,000 miles.... Have the reflash, fix her up, buy a good manual, and enjoy your bike.....

Thanks, for taking the time to answer my "WORRIES'. This white and green Vaquero is the most beautiful bike I've ever owned, but it is a different beast. I will adjust the belt and give Ivan a call. Thanks again.
