Watch how you check the oil, very tricky at times. I wish they had the sight glass same as my Nomad.

Are you sure you were not trying to drive the bike into the garage in 2nd or 3rd gear ? That would cause the engine to lug and ping ?

I get that sound also when I'm at a red light. Sounds like the pistons are rattling around a little. It's already hot here in Tucson 90's +

I don't get any pinging under acceleration, I use premium gas.

I too thought maybe an oil level issue. Level is good.
Bike only has 21,000 miles on it.

never used premium, but I believe our octane rating is higher up here, never had a problem with pinging or anything else fuel related, always ran regular.

Could it be a lifter/valve tapping noise? The lifter sometimes will lose some oil pressure in it and make some "tapping" noises. Take the bike out and run it by shifting through the gears at about 3500-4500 rpms. Works well for me when my Meanie and Voyager did/does it.

The old Voyages XII had the same issue, if you overfilled the crankcase it would cause the valves to tick away, my friend had that problem and as soon as I drained some oil to where it was supposed to be on the sight glass, the problem stopped.

Started using 89 octane (the mid grade stuff ...i think we have 84, 89 and 92 or 93 here where I am) in my vaquero...honestly, it is running better, and cooler...I hear the rattle too, or the noise whatever it is...Honestly, I am confident that on my bike, it is the throttle body butterflies clapping...but I have an air kit...maybe others have noticed this too

Mine has been doing that since about 4k miles, over 20k miles on it now and its no worse. Kind of a irregular off and on knock at a idle when its hot. You can feel it on the left side if you put your finger on the plastic covers.

I had a post going on another forum and it seems to just be the nature of the beast, but no problems from it.
