99 Carb Nomad

Need help. I have recently acquired nomad. The bladder is gutted. I was riding last night and smelled gas. I further notice that if you let off the throttle quickly i get backfiring happening out of the exhaust. Once I parked it I noticed fuel coming out from behind the air filter housing. I took it off and it appears to be coming out of the air cleaner housing. What would cause this and how to repair. A repair manual advises to get a new air cleaner for it is clogged. Any advise will be appreciated
Plugs removed and look fine also :-[

Welcome from Vermont
I believe you would get more attention if you deleted this post and go to the 1500/1600 garage, and re-post.
There are several guys here that I'm sure can help you, good luck. ;)

The fuel leak is probably the fuel pump. When mine failed, that is exactly what happened. Easy fix, although they seem to be pretty proud of that fuel pump. Just pull the tank and the pump is in line right under the tank on the right side. Two hose clamps and replace. All too easy.

Sounds like you also have an exhuast leak, try replacing the header gaskets first, you can use either kawi or HD gaskets.

Are there reed valves in place? Normally unburnt fuel will burn in the catalyt converter with air coming from the reed valves. When converter is whole you can't hear the backfire. I would check the fuel pump too. I lost the original at about 14,000 miles, but fuel was pouring out of the pump body.

He means that the Goatbladder (collector) has been gutted to reduce backpressure and to sound better.
