cutting out when hot?

Hello there brains trust.

My 98 1500, has developed an issue where after approx 15 miles it will cough/hesitate then go again. Yesterday it died completely but started again after 10 mins sitting. It did this twice before trailering the ol girl home. At that stage it cut out and had no ignition at all where previously it would turn over but not fire. Any ideas on where i should look first? Cheers, MC.U

G'day madcow.
Short in your wiring somewhere maybe ?... harness has several area's that can rub through over time... see if you can eyeball it.
Good luck

see if you can find someone close with a 1500 that will let you try their ignition switch . make sure the carb didn't pop out of the intake boot when it coughed . Both are very common problems .

The fact that it has been cranking but not starting sounds like weak battery issues to me. Start by making sure the battery is fully charged AND the charge doesn't drop like a rock when a load is put on the circuit. It is possible to show a "surface charge" ie, 12+ volts with a quick test from a multi meter when in fact that charge drops dramatically as soon as a load is put on the circuit. If the battery checks OK with a load on it, then test the alternator to see if it is charging the battery adequately. Alternator output should be greater than 13 volts. Also, check the battery connections, both positive and negative. Loose or corroded battery terminals can keep the current from the alternator from being passed into the battery so that over time, a good battery will run down.

Try to make sure the battery is good and hot, make sure all your grounds and positives are good, clean and tight. Should start right up. Also check your electrical switch, wiggle the key a little while trying to crank her. If she fires up, your switch is worn out. If she does start up, wiggle the key switch while shes running. If she dies it confirms the switch....They'll turn off on you going down the road.
Still if no joy, check all your fuses. If ok, did you just fill up before this problem? Did you just do any work to the bike? like install lights? No dash lights flickering?
Also, check your kickstand safety switch, and neutral safety switch by bypassing them temporarily....
Could be your coils, could be other things also. keep us advised....

These safety switches often lead folks stranded places if not cleaned, checked and lubed periodically....

If the battery, ignition switch, wiring, and connections all check out, and it still turns over without cranking, check out the ignition coils. Ignition coils that are going bad can stop working when they get hot, and eventually will not fire the plugs at all.
