Speedometer became a tachometer??

Weirdest thing.... we're in the Smokys and last night I note that my headlight is at about half illumination. 2002 Drifter 1500, 60K. I have no tail lights, no brake lights nor rear turn signals. Everything else works fine. I checked all my fuses, all okay. No visual wears in any of the harnesses that I can see without taking the whole thing apart. Bulbs, etc okay.

I figure that I have a short somewhere in the wiring harness? Or a relay?

OKAY, but get this... my speedometer is now a tachometer! WTF??

As many of you already know, the Drifter does not have a tach.

Anyone out there in virtual Kawasaki Land ever have this happen?

Help!

Never heard of such a thing with the speedometer.
I'm not knowledgeable enough to have much of an opinion on the cause.
My first thought would be a bad ground or a short in the instrument cluster.

Your speedometer THINKS its a tachometer... so your speedometer is a transmeter? Does it get mad when you call it a speedometer? Does it threaten to sue?

Okay, gentlemen...

GROUND IT WAS!! Bad ground in the harness to the stator/rectifier. Had a sharp guy at Power Sports in Franklin NC figure it out and was up and running in a few hours.

Sorry for the delayed response. My wife layed her Boulevard down on the way home in NW GA and messed herself up pretty good. Drizzle and slimy roads and she locked up coming to a quick stop.... 8 fractured ribs, collarbone and collapsed lung. Don't try this. She's still in a hospital after 4 weeks.

Ride safe.

Sorry to hear that about your wife. Similar situation with mine, a couple of years ago. Aggressive braking to stop at a red light in light rain. Intersections accumulate ruts after awhile and the bike got caught in one that took the bike down suddenly. Fortunately she was okay and ended up riding it back home. We hope your wife will be fine soon and have the courage to ride again.
