Strange Things Are Happening

2006 1600 Nomad- Performed some maintenance, including fuel filter change, oil/filter change, installed new to me gas gauge, etc. While tank was off, removed radiator cap and saw that it was full. Checked reservoir and it was a bit above the "Cold" mark. I did nothing with regards to the coolant except check the level. Buttoned everything back up and went out to run some errands. When I came out of a store, there was a puddle under the bike. No smell, but a bit slippery. When it dried on my fingers they were a bit sticky. I drove home (6 miles) and took the side cover off. The reservoir was empty. I filled it a bit above the "Full" mark. Went out a few hours later and started it and let it idle about 20 minutes. Went out to check and the fan was going and there was a puddle. From the slope of my garage floor I could tell it came from the drain hose on the reservoir and the reservoir was full to the top and hot to the touch. What's going on?

Update- Went to check reservoir again and it's empty. I thought it was full to the top, but garage light made it look that way. Top and bottom hoses were connected and reservoir doesn't leak (I took it off and filled it with water...no leaks).

Love this site. Did a bit of research and I bet I either didn't get the radiator cap on tight or it's passed away. Several identical posts point to one or the other. Tomorrow I'll lift tank and try redoing the cap, idle for a while and see what happens. If the reservoir empties onto the ground I'll get a a '96 Honda cap and see if that works.

I'd say when you took the rad cap off you introduced air into the system. You will need to bleed the system.

Looks like replacing cap with '96 Accord cap as in past similar threads solved the problem. Went for 200 mile ride yesterday and made frequent stops with no puddles. Reservoir was a little above "F" mark when I parked at home (engine hot) and at "L" mark this morning (engine cold). I don't know if OEM cap was pooped out as neither of two local parts stores could test it, so for $9.99 I bought a new one rather than mess around.

Looks like, you solved your own problem, But I'm listening and feel your pain. Thanks for sharing. It may help me later on in my journey. Congratulations on the fix, I thought I saw it coming as I read the posts.

Okay, I missed the "Accord" part. I did get the year range ('92-'96).

I fitted a cap from a Honda motorcross bike.Any small cap that meets the PSI rating will work. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-CRF4...item2eb5952090
