Side Cover Pins

Well....Santa brought me a new set of Chrome Side Covers and of course...even though I was being careful not to....I still managed to break the lower pin that holds the front of the left side cover.

What really frosted me was as soon as I heard it crack I stopped and found that it only broke about halfway through. No prob....a little super glue and I'm good to go. Nope...the stuff wouldn't even stick. I smooshed a few drops right in the little gap and pushed it back together expecting it to be stronger than new, but it never even bonded. That's just wrong....

Finally I broke it all the way off as it was just in the way now. I got the cover back on with just the top pin and the key latch. There is still a little nub on the bottom, but not much. It seems solid, like it ain't going nowhere, but it still pisses me off as I know they are fragile and I was being careful. I suppose it didn't help that it was about 36 degrees in my garage and all that stuff is pretty brittle right now!

How have you guys managed to rig another pin of sorts?

I would try gluing it again. Maybe use a good to part epoxy. JP weld, maybe. Glue it inside the house too. I'd imagine the 36 degrees might effect how it sets up.

The glue was warm....it came from inside the house! Maybe I'll try again this summer. I'm not in any hurry to take that cover off again. If I break the top pin off I'm really screwed.

Model car glues It's made for plastics.

my stock cover did that i drilled a small hole where the pin is and placed a small pan head bolt in the hole with a lock nut on the back side so the bolt stuck through and was secure in place. it took the place of the pin. $2 dollars for the pack on bolts at walmart and ten minutes to fix, a touch of black paint with a model brush and presto. its fixed.

Easy fix Net.

Grind or file off broken piece to make as flat a surface as possible.
Drill smaller hole than bolt, so bolt "threads" through plastic, put a nut on each end. Paint the end of the bolt that shows and nobody will ever know. ;)
Good to go!

Net, another option is one of the salvage companies that list on ebay. For 10-15.00 or so, you should be able to come up with one.
After I did this fix, and was in place for over a year, Cliff purchased salvage part and gave it to me for my last birthday.

Appreciate the ideas and photos fellas. Dick, my broken one is the lower pin...so I will just try the make a repair...thx though. I may not even have to for awhile...as I said....the cover seems pretty solid just with the top pin and key latch.

I had that problem of the pins breaking and replaced both pins with pan head screws like others have suggested.
Fix took little time and I don't have to worry about the damn plastic pins breaking off any more.

If you apply a little silicone grease on the rubber grommets that slide on the pins it makes it a little easier to remove without breaking.

I'm a little surprised Kawi makes those things so weak and cheesy. It would be just as easy to make a metal pin in the first place would it not?

You replace plastic with a little steel here and a little steel there... and before you know it Kris... the Nomad gets expensive. ;)

At least that is what I have come to believe would be their motive to use more plastic.

what glwilson said has some validity but another issue for kawi
would be wieght savings.a little metal here and a little metal
there can add up.you can see some of this going on with the
1700's.at least they haven't done like suzuki did with some
models and go with plastic fenders.

Bingo....

DD if you liked you could use the next bolt size down and trim it to take a plastic cap....

And yeah the cold don't help a bit.

OK it sounds like a dumb idea but I did this for the same reason, I took a soldiering gun and heated the plastic at both ends once good and hot I just stuck them together and wa la just like new it turned out just a little shorter than the factory but it worked if it don't work for you you can always do the grind and steel bolt but it did work for me.
